Best Fintech Companies to Work for in New York in 2026: What Independent Lists and Live Hiring Show

New York fintech employers are recognised by several independent publishers, but the lists rarely agree. American Banker's 2026 Best Fintechs to Work For names Capitolis, Alloy and Plaid among 33 companies, Great Place to Work's New York list names Circle, and Built In NYC highlights Coinbase, Gusto, Adyen and Toast. Mastercard appears on more lists than any other company, but it is a card network rather than a startup. Those lists were read on 1 October 2026 and were not re-read for this update. Finjobsly's live data, as of 20 October 2026, holds 858 New York roles at 25 of its 36 tracked employers, and 172 of them are at employers named in at least one list. This article keeps recognition, employer information and live hiring apart.

Key findings

  • Of 858 New York roles in Finjobsly's data (36 tracked employers, 4,182 active roles on 20 October 2026), 172 (20.0%) are at seven employers named in a list we fetched: Gusto 53, Plaid 42, Adyen 25, Carta 24, Coinbase 20, Toast 7 and Affirm 1.
  • Five of the New York-headquartered or New York-linked companies named by independent lists, Capitolis, Alloy, Glia, Circle and Customers Bank, have no roles in Finjobsly's panel.
  • All 20 of Coinbase's New York roles in the panel are internships, so its presence there is early-career only in this data.
  • Stripe is 183 of the 858 New York roles (21.3%) and is not named in any list fetched here. Of those, 149 list several cities. Ramp (131), Mercury (73), Robinhood (70) and Brex (68) are the next largest and are also not named in any list fetched here.
  • Pay ranges appear on 358 of 858 New York roles (41.7%), with a median advertised range of $166,300 to $218,150. Betterment, Adyen, Plaid, Carta and Gusto each disclose on a majority of their New York roles.

How were the New York shortlists built?

We used four signals and gave none a score. Recognition asks whether an independent publisher names the company. Presence asks whether the company's own page, or live postings, show a New York location. Disclosure covers what the employer publishes about its working model and benefits. Hiring counts the roles in Finjobsly's panel and how many show pay. Employee ratings from review sites are self-selected, so none is cited. For the national view, see our guide to the best fintech companies to work for.

American Banker, Best Fintechs to Work For 2026

American Banker published this list on 18 May 2026 and updated it on 19 May. It names 33 companies and says they preserved remote work options and non-salary benefit packages. It does not state who selected them or how. New York entries are Capitolis (18), Alloy (21), Glia Technologies (27) and Customers Bank (30). Plaid ranks 14th and is listed with San Francisco headquarters, but its own page shows a New York office.

\n

Great Place to Work, Fortune Best Workplaces in New York 2026

The 2026 New York list is based on Great Place to Work's Trust Index survey, 60 statements rated on a five-point scale plus two open questions. Eligible companies must be certified, have at least 10 US employees and be headquartered in New York State or the tri-state area. The financial entries we could read include Synchrony (1), Circle (14) and the insurtech Reserv (46). Circle is the only fintech in that group that matches the shortlist, and its own careers page describes a remote-first model without naming cities.

\n

Built In NYC, best fintech companies to work for

Built In NYC's 2026 page shows 20 companies including Coinbase, Adyen, Toast, Gusto, Airwallex, Narmi, Current and Cedar. It does not state a rating method, so we treat it as a directory-style signal. A separate work-life balance page lists Coinbase and Adyen again, plus smaller New York firms such as Moov, Formance and Brigit. Its method is also not stated.

\n

Glassdoor and Fortune lists with a US scope

Glassdoor's Consulting, Finance and Insurance list uses reviews from 17 October 2024 to 16 October 2025, with no self-nominations, and ranks Mastercard 8th and American Express 24th. Glassdoor's US list, which its New York page reproduces, places Mastercard 50th. Fortune's 2025 financial services list ranks Mastercard 15th, Affirm 27th and Carta 39th using survey feedback from more than 194,000 US employees. These lists are national, so they do not isolate New York teams.

Two further checks added little. Fast Company's 2026 Best Workplaces for Innovators (8 September 2026) names six financial services and fintech companies, and only MetLife is in New York. LinkedIn's Top Companies 2026 (28 April 2026) showed only large banks among US financial services entries.

What do New York fintech employers publish about working there?

These are employer statements and have not been independently checked.

  • Gusto: its careers page describes a hybrid model, with New York, San Francisco and Denver staff in the office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, and lists medical, dental, vision, fertility support and sabbaticals.
  • Betterment: its careers page gives a New York headquarters, calls the culture in-person with no required office days during summer and winter holidays, and lists equity for all employees, a 401(k) match from day one and a four-week sabbatical after six years. No independent list we fetched names Betterment.
  • Plaid: its careers page lists a New York City office and benefits covering health, fertility, mental health and parental leave, plus commuting perks such as CitiBike.
  • Capitolis: its careers page names New York as headquarters and says in-person collaboration matters.
  • Adyen: its careers site names New York among major hubs and describes an office-first model with flexibility when needed.
  • Remote-first employers: Coinbase, Affirm and Circle describe remote-first models. Affirm lists 18 weeks of paid leave for birth and non-birth parents.

Which recognised employers are hiring in New York in Finjobsly's panel?

Finjobsly data covers 36 tracked employers, not the whole market. On 20 October 2026 it held 4,182 active roles, of which 858 at 25 employers were New York-based. Stripe is 18.5% of the whole panel (775 of 4,182) and 21.3% of New York roles (183 of 858), so it weighs heavily in the totals.

Finjobsly data, 20 October 2026, n=858 New York roles. Twelve smaller employers are omitted (Block 25, Ripple 25, Chime 23, SoFi 13, Checkout.com 6, Fireblocks 5, FloQast 5, and Thought Machine, OakNorth and Wealthfront with 2 each, Affirm 1 and Wise 1). Affirm, with 1 New York role, is the seventh employer named in a list. Ramp and Plaid label their roles as New York offices but tag them remote, so the location and work-style fields disagree and the posting should be checked. Pay range shown means a valid minimum and maximum in USD.

The mix at the recognised employers differs. Of Plaid's 42 New York roles, 10 are sales and go-to-market, 10 engineering, 6 data, 6 product and design, 2 risk and compliance, 2 operations, 1 finance and 5 other. Gusto's 53 lean to engineering (21) and product and design (12). Carta's 24 are led by sales (8) and engineering (5). Coinbase's 20 are all internships, mostly in finance (6), data (4) and other roles (5). Adyen's 25 are mostly other titles (10), sales (6) and risk (4). Adyen's New York roles are recorded mostly as remote, which sits oddly with its office-first statement, so check each posting.

\n

What do pay and seniority look like for those roles?

Across all 858 New York roles, 358 (41.7%) carry a valid USD range. The median advertised minimum is $166,300 and the median advertised maximum $218,150 (n=358). Stripe advertises a range on only 6 of its 183 New York roles, and leaving them out moves each median by less than $400, so Stripe does not drive the figure. Many roles list several cities, and a posted range may vary by location, so treat these as advertised ranges rather than New York-specific pay.

Employern with rangeMedian advertised minimumMedian advertised maximum
Plaid31$176,400$237,000
Gusto32$163,000$204,000
Betterment24$138,250$161,250
Adyen22$174,500$241,000
Carta (indicative)16$156,713$204,250

Seniority is recorded on 848 of the 858 New York roles. Of those 848, 641 (75.6%) are Senior or above (Senior, Staff, Lead, Principal, Director, VP or Executive), 146 (17.2%) are Mid-Level and 61 (7.2%) are Junior or Internship, of which 35 are internships. By title, across all 858 roles, 203 are engineering, 172 sales and go-to-market, 135 product and design, 44 finance, 43 data and machine learning, 43 risk, compliance and legal, 39 marketing, 33 operations and support, 15 people and 131 other. Work style is recorded for 643 of the 858 roles (74.9%): 386 remote (60.0% of 643), 204 hybrid (31.7%) and 53 onsite (8.2%). \n

What does the overlap, or lack of it, tell a candidate?

New York-founded names such as Capitolis, Alloy and Glia are recognised by American Banker but do not appear in Finjobsly's panel, so this data cannot show whether they are hiring. The employers the panel does show in volume, Stripe, Ramp, Mercury, Robinhood and Brex, were not named in any list we fetched. That reflects each list's scope, entry rules and, for Great Place to Work, certification requirements. It says nothing about the employee experience. A sensible sequence is to use lists to find names, read each employer's own page for in-office expectations, then check live roles and whether pay is shown.

Current opportunities

Employer pages: Plaid, Gusto, Betterment, Capitolis, Adyen, Carta, Coinbase, Circle and Affirm. Alloy's careers page returned an error, Block's returned no content, Mastercard's named no locations, and LinkedIn's full ranked list was blocked to our fetch. We did not verify Toast, Glia or Alloy locations on their own pages.

Finjobsly data: active roles on 20 October 2026 (4,182 roles, 36 employers). New York figures use the same location rule as our New York employer article. A role counts as New York City if its location, city or raw location text contains New York (including "New-York", but not "New York State"), NYC, a borough or neighbourhood name (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island, Sheepshead Bay, Brighton Beach, Coney Island, Long Island City), or a standalone "NY" used as a city shorthand in a multi-city list. A "City, NY" value is not counted, which excludes 4 Toast roles in Garden City, Hempstead, Levittown and Binghamton. One Carta role listed as "New York / New Jersey" is counted. Multi-location roles are counted once in New York (403 of 858) and are not counted for any other city here. Roles with placeholder, remote-only or country-only locations are not counted, so all figures are floors. Role families are assigned from job titles using one rule applied across Finjobsly articles, in this order: data and machine learning (data scientist, machine learning, data or analytics engineer, data and business analyst, BI, analytics, and fraud, risk or credit modelling titles), sales and go-to-market (sales, account executive, business development, SDR or BDR, partnerships, customer success, account management, solutions engineering), engineering (engineer, developer, software, SRE, DevOps, architect), product and design, risk, compliance and legal, marketing, finance, people, and operations and support. Titles that match none are counted as other. Title matching is imperfect, so a few roles may sit in a neighbouring family. Family figures cover all 858 New York roles. Seniority is recorded on 848 roles and work style on 643. Pay uses roles advertised in USD with a minimum of at least $20,000 and a maximum not below the minimum (358 roles), with medians of advertised minimums and maximums, n is stated and n below 20 is indicative. Review scores, benefits fields and sentiment fields were not used. These matching rules were re-run for this update, and the panel has grown since the 1 October edition, so figures should not be compared with that edition.

Limits: the panel is 36 employers, so many recognised companies are absent. Lists measure different things, and some do not state a method. No trend is claimed.

Last updated: 20 October 2026 (Finjobsly hiring figures). Independent lists as accessed 1 October 2026.
