A fintech career can start in engineering, product, data, sales, compliance and risk, operations, marketing, finance or people roles, and live job postings show these paths differ sharply in size, seniority and advertised pay. As of 20 October 2026, Finjobsly tracked 4,182 live roles at 36 fintech employers. Engineering (1,093 roles) and sales and go-to-market (922) account for 48% of them, while only 8.1% of roles with a recorded seniority level are Junior or Internship. This guide organises fintech careers around what those postings say each path looks like today. It describes Finjobsly's tracked employers, not the whole fintech market.
\nKey findings
- Of 4,182 live roles Finjobsly tracked on 20 October 2026, engineering is the largest career path (1,093 roles, 26.1%), followed by sales and go-to-market (922, 22.0%), product and design (407, 9.7%), data and machine learning (287, 6.9%) and risk, compliance and legal (263, 6.3%). A further 626 roles (15.0%) have titles that match none of the families.
- Entry-level roles are scarce in most paths: 336 of 4,124 roles with a recorded seniority level (8.1%) are tagged Junior or Internship. The share is 15% in operations and support and 13% in sales, but 5% in engineering and 2% in product and design.
- Among 1,166 roles that advertised a usable USD pay range, the median advertised range is $172,000 to $228,200. Engineering (n=378) is $192,000 to $243,000 and operations and support (n=49) is $120,000 to $151,000.
- Compliance appears as a skill tag at all 36 employers, more employers than Payments (31), Go (33), Python (34) or SQL (33).
- Stripe holds 18.5% of all live roles in the panel, including 27% of sales and 19% of product and design roles, so path-level shares partly reflect one employer's hiring.
- Where work style is recorded (3,140 roles), 60% are tagged remote, 32% hybrid and 8% onsite.
What are the main career paths in fintech?
Fintech employers hire for the same functional families as most technology companies, with financial-services specialisms layered on top. The table groups every live role in Finjobsly's panel by job title into nine families plus an other group (the rule is in the Methodology section). Percentages use all 4,182 live roles as the denominator.
| Career path | Live roles | Share of 4,182 | Employers with at least one role (of 36) | Stripe's share of the path |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | 1,093 | 26.1% | 34 | 14% |
| Sales and go-to-market | 922 | 22.0% | 32 | 27% |
| Other (no family match) | 626 | 15.0% | 36 | 14% |
| Product and design | 407 | 9.7% | 31 | 19% |
| Data and machine learning | 287 | 6.9% | 30 | 15% |
| Risk, compliance and legal | 263 | 6.3% | 32 | 15% |
| Finance | 192 | 4.6% | 33 | 10% |
| Operations and support | 180 | 4.3% | 33 | 33% |
| Marketing | 127 | 3.0% | 29 | 18% |
| People | 85 | 2.0% | 22 | 26% |
Two readings matter. First, data and machine learning is 287 roles (6.9%) because the title rule counts data engineer, analytics engineer, analyst, business intelligence and machine learning titles as data before it considers engineering. Second, engineering is advertised at 34 of the 36 employers, and finance and operations at 33 each, so they are the least dependent on any single company, while people (22 employers) and marketing (29) are the most dependent. For a plain-language glossary of the titles inside each family, see fintech job titles explained.
\nHow senior are the roles in each fintech career path?
Fintech postings skew experienced. Across 4,124 roles with a recorded seniority level, 45.3% are Senior, 21.7% Mid-Level, and 24.8% are Lead, Staff, Principal, Director, VP or Executive. The mix differs by path. The denominators below are the roles with a recorded seniority level in each path.
| Career path | Roles with seniority recorded | Junior or Internship | Mid-Level | Senior | Lead, Staff or Principal | Director, VP or Executive |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | 1,080 | 5% | 17% | 46% | 31% | 2% |
| Sales and go-to-market | 903 | 13% | 35% | 42% | 7% | 3% |
| Other (no family match) | 616 | 8% | 19% | 45% | 19% | 8% |
| Product and design | 402 | 2% | 12% | 48% | 31% | 7% |
| Data and machine learning | 285 | 11% | 22% | 44% | 22% | 0% |
| Risk, compliance and legal | 259 | 8% | 21% | 45% | 19% | 7% |
| Finance | 192 | 8% | 17% | 57% | 10% | 7% |
| Operations and support | 178 | 15% | 29% | 34% | 19% | 3% |
| Marketing | 125 | 7% | 11% | 57% | 14% | 10% |
| People | 84 | 6% | 13% | 57% | 20% | 4% |
Percentages are rounded and may not sum to 100. Engineering and product and design show the deepest individual-contributor ladders, with 31% of roles at Lead, Staff or Principal level in each (330 of 1,080 and 125 of 402). Sales has the widest middle, with 35% Mid-Level roles. Seniority is a classification applied to the posting, not a statement about a company's promotion practices.
\nCan you start a fintech career at entry level?
Yes, but the entry points cluster in a few paths and a few employers. Finjobsly's panel had 262 Junior and 74 Internship roles on 20 October 2026, 336 in total or 8.1% of the 4,124 roles with a recorded seniority level. Four employers hold 168 of the 336: Toast (56), Stripe (53), Coinbase (34) and Checkout.com (25). By path, operations and support has the largest entry-level share (27 of 178, 15%), followed by sales and go-to-market (116 of 903, 13%, the most junior roles of any path), data and machine learning (31 of 285, 11%) and risk, compliance and legal (22 of 259, 8%). Engineering (51 of 1,080, 5%) and product and design (8 of 402, 2%) are the hardest to enter directly. Note that the operations and support family includes associate, assistant and specialist titles.
The practical reading: entry-level candidates in engineering or product face a thin supply of junior postings in this panel, and may need an adjacent route such as support, operations or sales into a technical team. Our guides to breaking into fintech as a student or early-career candidate and the general breaking-in guide cover that in more depth.
\nWhat do fintech jobs pay?
Pay is recorded on 1,490 of the 4,182 live roles (35.6%), in any currency. Of those, 1,178 are paid in USD. This table uses the 1,166 USD roles remaining after removing 12 with an advertised minimum below $40,000, which are clearly not annual figures. Figures are medians of the advertised minimum and maximum, not of salaries paid. A sample below 20 is indicative only.
| Career path | USD roles with a range (n) | Employers | Median advertised minimum | Median advertised maximum |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering | 378 | 21 | $192,000 | $243,000 |
| Product and design | 144 | 19 | $190,800 | $250,900 |
| Data and machine learning | 84 | 16 | $172,500 | $231,000 |
| Risk, compliance and legal | 73 | 18 | $165,000 | $215,000 |
| Sales and go-to-market | 135 | 17 | $156,200 | $233,168 |
| Other (no family match) | 182 | 20 | $149,418 | $195,490 |
| Marketing | 49 | 15 | $148,000 | $197,000 |
| Finance | 44 | 15 | $144,000 | $180,000 |
| People | 28 | 12 | $141,000 | $195,000 |
| Operations and support | 49 | 17 | $120,000 | $151,000 |
| All paths | 1,166 | 24 | $172,000 | $228,200 |
By seniority, the median advertised range (USD, n in brackets) is $140,000 to $184,000 for Mid-Level (174), $169,000 to $218,900 for Senior (564), $164,300 to $220,400 for Lead (80), $218,025 to $278,300 for Staff (217) and $236,000 to $317,000 for Director (52). Junior roles (n=32) show $95,015 to $110,000, a thin sample. Principal (n=21) is $202,000 to $280,000, and Executive (n=9) and VP (n=3) are indicative only.
These figures are not comparable with government wage statistics. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median of $135,980 for software developers in May 2025, $120,230 for data scientists, and $80,730 for compliance officers, covering all industries and all experience levels (software developers, data scientists, compliance officers). Finjobsly's figures reflect advertised ranges at a small set of fintech employers, weighted towards Senior and Staff roles. Brex alone supplies 186 of the 1,166 USD ranges and Coinbase 144, so treat the panel median as a statement about those employers. BLS also projects 10% employment growth for software developers and 35% for data scientists from 2025 to 2035, and 4% for compliance officers. For role-specific pay detail see data analyst salaries in fintech and UK fintech engineering salaries, or use the salary benchmark.
\nWhich employers hire for each fintech career path?
Hiring in every path is led by a handful of employers. The table lists the five employers with the most live roles in each path as of 20 October 2026.
| Career path | Employers with the most live roles (count) |
|---|---|
| Engineering | Stripe 157, Affirm 117, Coinbase 82, Brex 63, Robinhood 60 |
| Sales and go-to-market | Stripe 246, Toast 217, Block 115, Adyen 56, Checkout.com 43 |
| Product and design | Stripe 79, Brex 40, Affirm 25, Coinbase 18, Mercury 18 |
| Data and machine learning | Stripe 42, Affirm 28, Coinbase 26, Adyen 22, Checkout.com 16 |
| Risk, compliance and legal | Stripe 40, Adyen 23, Coinbase 20, Brex 17, Carta 15 |
| Operations and support | Stripe 59, Brex 13, Coinbase 10, Adyen 9, Plaid 8 |
| Marketing | Brex 23, Stripe 23, Block 7, Checkout.com 7, Adyen 5 |
| Finance | Stripe 20, Coinbase 18, Carta 13, Robinhood 12, Ripple 10 |
| People | Stripe 22, Adyen 10, Toast 8, Ramp 7, Brex 6 |
Sales stands out for how little it is spread: Stripe and Toast together hold 463 of the 922 sales and go-to-market roles (50%). If you are targeting a specific path, the lists above are a starting point, but 23 of the 36 employers have fewer than 100 live roles each, so smaller companies are worth checking too. See fintech companies hiring most right now for the employer-level view and fintech companies for data science jobs for the data path.
\nAre fintech careers remote?
Work style is recorded on 3,140 of 4,182 roles (75.1%). Of those, 1,877 (60%) are tagged remote, 1,018 (32%) hybrid and 245 (8%) onsite. By path, the remote share of tagged roles is highest in data and machine learning (159 of 218, 73%), product and design (207 of 309, 67%), engineering (573 of 859, 67%) and risk, compliance and legal (123 of 186, 66%). It is lowest in sales and go-to-market (290 of 655, 44%) and finance (64 of 128, 50%). These differences are strongly shaped by employer: Affirm, Block, Plaid, Kraken, Mercury and Coinbase tag most or nearly all of their roles remote, while Toast, which has 217 sales roles, tags 208 of them hybrid and Brex tags 236 of its 244 recorded roles hybrid. \nWhich skills and backgrounds transfer into fintech?
Skill tags show what employers write into postings, with the caveat that Stripe tags Payments on 748 of its 775 roles. Skill tags are recorded on 4,168 of the 4,182 roles. Across all 4,182 roles, Payments appears on 1,969 (47.1%), Compliance on 1,087 (26.0%), Go on 984 (23.5%), Python on 702 (16.8%) and SQL on 612 (14.6%). Excluding Stripe (3,407 roles), the shares are Payments 35.8%, Compliance 27.7%, Go 20.2%, Python 17.8% and SQL 13.3%. Compliance appears at all 36 employers, Payments at 31.
The transferable-skill implications follow from that data. Regulatory and risk knowledge from banking, insurance or audit is demanded across the panel, not just at one employer, and SQL and Python are portable between analytics, risk and finance roles. Candidates from traditional finance should read how to transition from banking to fintech, engineers can check fintech software engineer skills and languages, and compliance specialists can see regtech and compliance hiring trends.
\nHow do you find and get hired for a fintech role?
A workable sequence, based on the data above:
- Pick a path, then a seniority band. The seniority tables show where entry points exist. If you are early in your career, prioritise paths and employers with the highest junior shares.
- Check pay before applying. Pay ranges are recorded on 35.6% of roles, so filter for roles that show one and compare against the salary benchmark.
- Tailor your CV to the posting language. The resume analyzer compares a CV with a job description, and the career coach helps plan a move between paths.
- Research the employer. The companies directory and fintech hiring index give context before you apply.

\nMethodology
Source and scope. All Finjobsly figures come from Finjobsly's jobs database, rows with status active, as of 20 October 2026: 4,182 live roles at 36 tracked employers. This is a panel of tracked employers, not the whole fintech market, and it should not be read as market share or total job counts. Figures are cross-sectional snapshots and make no claim about change over time. The panel has grown since the 1 October edition, so figures should not be compared with it.
Career path rule. Role families are assigned from job titles using one rule applied across Finjobsly articles, in this order: data and machine learning (data scientist, machine learning, data or analytics engineer, data and business analyst, BI, analytics, and fraud, risk or credit modelling titles), sales and go-to-market (sales, account executive, business development, SDR or BDR, partnerships, customer success, account management, solutions engineering), engineering (engineer, developer, software, SRE, DevOps, architect), product and design, risk, compliance and legal, marketing, finance, people, and operations and support. Titles that match none are counted as other. Title matching is imperfect, so a few roles may sit in a neighbouring family, and the boundaries of the smaller families (marketing, finance, people and operations) are the least precise. Each role is counted in one family only, and the employer's own department field is not used because it is inconsistent across employers.
Partly recorded fields. Seniority is recorded on 4,124 of 4,182 roles. Work style is recorded on 3,140 (75.1%). A pay range is recorded on 1,490 (35.6%), of which 1,178 are in USD. Pay figures use USD only, with no currency conversion, after excluding 12 roles with an advertised minimum below $40,000 and any range with a maximum below its minimum. They are medians of advertised minimum and maximum pay, not realised pay, and n below 20 is indicative. Skill tags are recorded on 4,168 roles.
Limitations. Stripe accounts for 775 of the 4,182 roles (18.5%), and Brex and Coinbase for 330 of the 1,166 usable USD ranges, so employer mix shapes every path-level figure. Location, benefits and employer satisfaction data are not used. External figures are from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook, pages last modified 27 August 2026 and read on 1 October 2026, and are not comparable with Finjobsly's advertised ranges.
