Staff Software Engineer, Tax Experiences

GustoSan Francisco, CA
Full-timeNot specifiedJul 10, 2026

About Gusto

At Gusto, we're on a mission to grow the small business economy. We handle the hard stuff — payroll, health insurance, 401(k)s, and HR — so owners can focus on their craft and their customers. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve.

All full-time employees receive competitive base pay, benefits, and equity (RSUs) — because everyone who helps build Gusto should share in its success. Offer amounts are determined by role, level, and location. Learn more about our Total Rewards philosophy.

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Team:

We’re a small group of talented engineers, designers, data scientists, and product managers working to improve the experience of collecting, calculating, paying, and filing taxes. Our team aims to make the complexity of dealing with hundreds of tax agencies disappear and to make compliance easy.

We own everything a customer sees and does around taxes: from onboarding through ongoing account management, payments, and filings. We make sure that communication about those experiences is clear and actionable, and that the underlying systems are reasonable and sustainable to build on.

This team is responsible for the full stack of work, not just the frontend. We implement work up and down the stack to build these delightful experiences, and we partner regularly with all of the teams in the Tax Organization and many teams outside of it as well.

This is one of the most important teams at Gusto. Most companies know how to pay their people, but many companies don't know how to properly withhold, pay, or file taxes. One of the reasons that they pay for Gusto every month is the exact product that we provide.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Execute on the technical strategy for your team's domain in alignment with team and group-level OKRs, and contribute to the broader Tax Engineering roadmap through collaboration.
  • Design, build, and test the experience that enables people to add and update their tax information at Gusto.
  • Advocate for the needs of our customers, employers and employees who rely on Gusto to ensure that their taxes are collected, calculated, and filed correctly.
  • Collaborate on complex and ambiguous problems with partnerships across Engineering, Product Management, Design, Data Science, Compliance, Operations, and other cross-functional teams.
  • Support the software platform that powers multiple 1st and 3rd party products and serves millions of businesses.
  • Mentor and grow fellow engineers working to create holistic and scalable solutions
  • Drive the product development process from concept to launch, delivering delightful products that make payroll, taxes, and compliance simple and easy.
  • Improve the productivity and happiness of our teams with the design systems, components, and interfaces you build.
  • Engage in a highly supportive environment working with others to drive productivity and innovation.
  • Identify and prioritize long-term investments to improve foundational systems and architecture.
  • Apply AI tools as a regular part of your engineering workflow, and bring an AI-native lens to product decisions: identify where AI can reduce customer effort, simplify complex tax workflows, and surface proactive guidance before customers know they need it.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with expertise in React, TypeScript, as well as experience with Ruby on Rails, SQL, or other backend languages
  • Experience in one of these domains is preferred: Payroll, Taxes, or Compliance
  • Experience working in large, complex codebases and a demonstrated ability to improve them incrementally without breaking things. Designing, building, and testing production level code that functions at scale.
  • An aptitude and interest in bringing clarity and simplicity to complex and ambiguous problems
  • Experience applying AI tools to accelerate development, improve code quality, and build testing. Familiar with AI-assisted development workflows.
  • A preference for working collaboratively with people, not in a silo. Pairing, thought partnership, and shared investigation feel natural, not like overhead.
  • Able to communicate technical complexity clearly to product and design partners, and help the team navigate tradeoffs with full context.
  • Strong systems thinking: the ability to build mental models of unfamiliar systems, ask the right questions, and produce clear analysis that others can act on.

Please note that a two day travel to a Gusto office for onboarding is required for this position.
If you have any questions regarding this requirement, please share with your recruiter.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $163,000–$204,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $197,000–$247,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. Employees who are based in those locations will be expected to work from the office on designated days approximately 2-3 days per week (or more depending on role). The same office expectations apply to all Symmetry roles, Gusto's subsidiary, whose physical office is in Scottsdale.

Note: The San Francisco office expectations encompass both the San Francisco and San Jose metro areas.

When approved to work from a location other than a Gusto office, a secure, reliable, and consistent internet connection is required. This includes non-office days for hybrid employees.

Staff Software Engineer, Retirement AI

About the Role:

You’ll be a key engineer helping us ship real, user-facing AI at Gusto Retirement. This role is all about bias to action: owning problems end-to-end, getting working software in front of customers, and iterating quickly. You’ll work closely with a small, senior team to implement language-model-powered experiences. If you like being hands-on, making pragmatic technical decisions, working closely with product & design partners, and turning ideas into production features, you’ll be a great fit.

About the Team:

We’re a small, focused AI product team building practical, high-impact experiences to help people save for retirement at Gusto Retirement. The team is senior, collaborative, and very execution-focused—PMs bring strong ideas, and we own the execution fully. We work closely with product, design, and partner engineering teams, but keep tight ownership of our priorities and roadmap.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Design, build, and ship production features that use large language models to solve real customer problems.
  • Implement and integrate LLMs (prompting, tool loops, evaluation, monitoring, etc).
  • Make pragmatic architecture decisions, de-risk tricky areas, and keep the work unblocked.
  • Partner with product and design to refine ideas, shape scope, and iterate quickly on end-to-end experiences.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams to integrate with existing systems and unblock dependencies.
  • Write clear, reliable, well-tested code that ships quickly and scales well.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience building and shipping production products or platforms
  • Hands-on experience implementing LLM-powered features (e.g., RAG flows, agents, tool loops, workflow automation with language models, etc)
  • Strong engineering skills (e.g., services, APIs, data flows); comfortable spending most of your time coding.
  • Experience running or heavily contributing to a team’s execution: sprints, Jira, scoping, and cross-functional coordination.
  • Bias to action: you default to trying things, iterating, and learning, rather than getting stuck in analysis or waiting for direction.
  • Clear communicator who can work well with product, design, and other engineering teams without needing a formal management title.
  • Experienced with Ruby on Rails (or any comparable language), React (or any comparable library).

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $187,000-$234,000 in Denver & most remote locations, and $227,000-$284,000 for San Francisco & New York. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Legal & Compliance Tech IT Product Manager

About the Role

As a key member of Enterprise Applications IT (EAIT), the Legal Tech IT Product Manager owns the AI-first strategy, roadmap, and delivery of the enterprise applications supporting Gusto’s Legal & Compliance organization. This is an AI-forward product role: you will reimagine how legal and compliance work gets done by embedding generative AI, AI agents, and intelligent automation into systems like contract lifecycle management (CLM), matter and legal-spend management, e-signature, entity and corporate records management, legal hold and e-discovery, and governance, risk, and compliance (GRC) platforms.

Acting as the primary interface between Legal & Compliance teams and EAIT delivery resources, you will translate business needs into well-defined, AI-enabled product requirements, guide solution design, and drive continuous improvement across core legal and compliance processes. In line with Gusto’s enterprise systems strategy, you will help shift legal operations from reactive, manual workflows to predictive, context-aware, and self-improving platforms—designing agentic workflows and Model Context Protocols (MCPs) that connect legal systems to large language models—while ensuring privilege protection, security, compliance, and measurable impact. This role blends product leadership and deep systems knowledge with strong AI literacy and a bias toward applying AI to every part of the legal technology stack.

About the Team

The Enterprise Applications IT (EAIT) team drives the intelligent transformation of Gusto’s enterprise systems, integrating AI, automation, and advanced analytics across our internal applications ecosystem to improve scalability, efficiency, and decision-making. EAIT builds MCPs, AI agents, and intelligent workflows that connect systems and make enterprise processes smarter, faster, and more predictive, while providing reliable, secure, and scalable application platforms for critical business processes.

Within EAIT, this role provides dedicated, AI-forward product ownership for the Legal & Compliance technology domain, complementing existing product and platform owners to establish a mature, well-governed, and increasingly autonomous enterprise applications operating model. This is a new role, designed to expand the team’s capacity to operationalize AI within legal and compliance workflows and modernize the systems behind that work.

What You’ll Do Day-to-Day

AI-First Product Ownership & Roadmap (Legal & Compliance Technology)

  • Own the product vision, AI roadmap, and backlog for the legal and compliance technology portfolio within EAIT, with AI and automation as the default lens for every initiative.
  • Set a multi-year vision for an AI-augmented legal function, identifying where generative AI, AI agents, and automation can eliminate manual effort, accelerate cycle times, and improve quality and risk outcomes.
  • Align roadmap priorities with Legal & Compliance leadership, EAIT’s AI transformation strategy, and enterprise architecture standards.
  • Define success metrics and outcomes—including AI adoption, automation rate, accuracy, cycle-time reduction, and cost-to-serve—to measure business value and system effectiveness.

AI, Automation & Agentic Workflows

  • Design and deliver generative-AI capabilities across the legal stack: AI-assisted contract drafting, review, redlining, clause extraction, and risk flagging; AI summarization of matters, contracts, and legal documents; and natural-language search across legal knowledge.
  • Build and productize AI agents that execute or augment core legal and compliance processes—such as legal intake triage and routing, NDA and standard-contract self-service, obligation and renewal tracking, policy Q&A, and regulatory-change monitoring.
  • Define and prioritize Model Context Protocols (MCPs) and integrations that securely connect legal systems (CLM, matter management, document management, GRC) to large language models and orchestration frameworks.
  • Apply retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) over contracts, policies, and legal knowledge bases to deliver grounded, citable answers for legal and business stakeholders.
  • Evaluate, pilot, and scale AI legal-tech vendors and native AI features (e.g., contract AI, AI assistants, e-discovery AI), running structured proofs-of-concept and build-vs-buy assessments.
  • Establish evaluation and quality processes for AI features—prompt design, model selection and tradeoffs, accuracy and hallucination testing, human-in-the-loop review, and continuous tuning.

Business Process & Solution Design

  • Lead end-to-end, AI-augmented redesign of core legal workflows—contract lifecycle management, matter intake and management, outside-counsel and legal-spend (e-billing), e-signature, entity and corporate records management, and legal hold and e-discovery.
  • Translate business requirements into clear functional specifications and solution designs—including where AI augments, automates, or fully owns a step, and where humans stay in the loop—for EAIT delivery teams.
  • Ensure solutions are scalable, auditable, and aligned with data privacy, security, internal controls, and compliance standards, including protection of privileged and sensitive information in all AI workflows.

Enterprise Applications Enablement

  • Partner with EAIT engineers, administrators, AI architects, and platform owners to design and deliver enhancements, integrations, MCPs, and AI agents across legal technology platforms.
  • Review and approve configurations, workflows, integrations, prompts, and agent designs to ensure they meet business, legal, and IT governance requirements.
  • Guide prioritization of enhancements, AI capabilities, upgrades, and technical-debt remediation across legal-managed platforms.

Stakeholder Partnership & Delivery

  • Serve as the primary EAIT point of contact for Legal & Compliance stakeholders and as a champion for AI-first ways of working across the legal function.
  • Manage intake, prioritization, and delivery of requests, balancing stakeholder needs with EAIT capacity and the AI roadmap.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives from discovery through deployment, ensuring clear communication, change management, and timely execution.

Responsible AI, Controls, Privacy & Insights

  • Govern the full lifecycle of AI agents and MCPs in the legal domain, ensuring responsible-AI practices: guardrails, privilege protection, data governance, access controls, auditability, and human oversight.
  • Partner with Legal, IT risk, Security, and audit teams to ensure AI-enabled systems and processes support privacy, regulatory, and SOX-related requirements and safeguard attorney-client privilege and sensitive data.
  • Define and oversee KPIs and operational metrics for legal and compliance systems, including AI accuracy, reliability, adoption, and ROI.
  • Collaborate with data, BI, and AI teams to deliver dashboards, analytics, and AI-driven insights that support data-driven legal operations.

Change Management, AI Enablement & Adoption

  • Drive successful adoption of new AI capabilities through training, documentation, prompt and playbook libraries, and hands-on change management.
  • Coach legal and compliance teams on safe, effective, and confident use of AI tools, and act as the subject-matter expert for legal AI and technology within EAIT, promoting best practices and standardization.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Business Administration, Legal Studies, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in enterprise applications, legal operations / legal technology, business systems, or product management, with hands-on expertise supporting legal and/or compliance functions.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering AI-powered products or features—generative AI / large language models, AI assistants, or intelligent automation—ideally within legal, compliance, or enterprise applications, with a clear bias toward applying AI to solve business problems.
  • Working knowledge of leading LLM platforms (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini) and core GenAI techniques such as prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), evaluation, and guardrails, with the ability to reason about model tradeoffs.
  • Familiarity with AI agent and orchestration frameworks (e.g., LangChain, CrewAI, Semantic Kernel) and Model Context Protocols (MCPs), and experience integrating AI with enterprise systems is a strong plus.
  • Hands-on experience with legal technology platforms such as contract lifecycle management (e.g., Ironclad, Agiloft, DocuSign CLM), matter management and e-billing (e.g., SimpleLegal, Brightflag, Legal Tracker), e-signature (e.g., DocuSign), entity management, legal hold / e-discovery, and/or GRC tools—including their native AI capabilities.
  • Experience evaluating, selecting, and deploying AI legal-tech vendors and running proofs-of-concept and build-vs-buy assessments.
  • Strong commitment to responsible, secure, and explainable AI, with experience embedding privacy, privilege protection, audit controls, and SOX-aligned governance into AI-enabled workflows.
  • Experience owning or managing enterprise application products within an IT or EAIT-style organization, and the ability to translate business needs into product roadmaps, functional requirements, and delivered solutions.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and the ability to partner effectively across Legal, Compliance, IT, and executive leadership, with excellent written and verbal communication and the ability to influence without authority.
  • Growth mindset and the ability to operate in ambiguity, define standards where none exist, and scale AI solutions from proof-of-concept to enterprise-wide adoption.
  • Relevant certifications (PMP, product management, AI/ML, or legal operations / CLM certifications) are a plus.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $221,000-247,000 in San Francisco Bay Area. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Gusto has physical office spaces in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City. About the role

This role's scope is the equivalent of a Director, PMM in many organizations. We’re looking for an experienced, customer-obsessed, and AI-fluent Product Marketing leader to lead the go-to-market strategy and execution for Gusto’s core products, spanning payroll, time & attendance, contractors, and HR experiences and services.

In this highly strategic and cross-functional leadership role, you’ll define how Gusto shows up to target audiences—translating customer and market insights into compelling positioning, clear messaging, and actionable plans. You’ll guide how we prioritize opportunities, shape go-to-market plays, and ensure each product is brought to market in a way that drives impact for the entire Gusto portfolio.

Reporting to the Head of Product Marketing, this role will lead a team of full-stack product marketers and partner closely with leaders across Product, Sales, Growth, and Marketing to align strategies and drive measurable results.

Drive Cross-Functional Alignment & Accountability: Act as the connective tissue across Product, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Experience to align on shared goals and orchestrate execution across teams. Bring structure, momentum, and accountability to complex initiatives.

Own Performance & Optimization: Define success metrics and track performance across initiatives. Drive regular reviews of GTM performance and lead iteration to improve outcomes over time.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 10+ years in marketing, product marketing, or product management, with 6+ years focused on product marketing
  • Proven success leading portfolio-level GTM strategy and execution across multiple products and audiences
  • Strong leadership and people management experience, with a track record of coaching and building high-performing PMMs
  • Ability to move between strategic planning and hands-on execution—comfortable with ambiguity and bias toward action
  • Excellent cross-functional collaboration and communication skills; adept at influencing across Sales, Product, and Marketing
  • Deep experience with customer segmentation, positioning, pricing, and GTM planning
  • Experience in SMB, fintech, HR/benefits/payroll tech, or a complex multi-audience business is a plus

About the Role

As part of the Enterprise IT Applications team, the IT Applications Support Analyst owns the day-to-day support, configuration, and continuous improvement of the enterprise applications that power Billing, Order-to-Cash (O2C), and Cash Reconciliation. This role keeps these business-critical finance systems running reliably — troubleshooting incidents, fulfilling change requests, and partnering with Finance stakeholders to translate business needs into well-supported application solutions.

A core focus of this role is applying AI and automation to modernize how finance applications are supported. You'll look for opportunities to automate manual processes, reduce ticket volume through self-service and intelligent tooling, and leverage AI-driven approaches to triage, analysis, and reconciliation. You'll act as a subject-matter expert on the billing and cash application landscape, including the integrations that connect these systems to the wider ERP and data ecosystem.

Here's what you'll do day-to-day

Application Support & Incident Management

  • Provide support for billing, O2C, and cash-reconciliation applications, owning complex incidents and escalations.
  • Triage, investigate, and resolve application issues within agreed SLAs, performing root-cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
  • Manage the incident, problem, and change lifecycle in the ITSM tool (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira), keeping tickets and documentation current.
  • Coordinate with vendors and internal teams to resolve defects, raise support cases, and track fixes through to closure.
  • Support the month-end billing run — monitoring billing jobs/batches, troubleshooting failures, and ensuring invoices generate completely and on time for close.

AI & Automation

  • Identify and build AI- and automation-driven solutions to reduce manual effort, accelerate issue resolution, and lower ticket volume.
  • Apply automation (scripting, workflow tools, RPA) to repetitive support, configuration, and reconciliation tasks.
  • Leverage AI tooling for intelligent ticket triage, root-cause analysis, anomaly detection, and knowledge-base assistance.
  • Partner with Finance and IT to automate reconciliations, exception handling, and cash-application logic.
  • Stay current on emerging AI and automation capabilities and champion their adoption across the supported application portfolio.

Configuration, Enhancements & Releases

  • Configure and maintain application settings supporting billing rules, pricing, order workflows, payment application, and reconciliation logic.
  • Gather requirements from Finance stakeholders and translate them into configuration changes, enhancements, or functional specifications.
  • Support testing (unit, SIT, UAT), deployments, and release cycles, including regression testing for patches and upgrades.
  • Maintain technical and functional documentation, SOPs, and knowledge-base articles for the supported applications.

Integrations, Data & Reconciliation Support

  • Monitor and support integrations and interfaces between billing/O2C/cash systems and the ERP, banks, payment gateways, and data warehouse.
  • Investigate data and interface failures (e.g., failed payment files, posting errors, reconciliation breaks) and drive timely resolution.
  • Write and run queries/reports (e.g., SQL) to analyze issues, validate data, and support audit and month-end close activities.
  • Partner with Finance to ensure system controls, automated reconciliations, and cash-application logic operate accurately and reliably.

Stakeholder & Continuous Improvement

  • Act as a trusted point of contact between Enterprise IT and Finance Operations for the supported application portfolio.
  • Identify automation, AI, configuration, and process-improvement opportunities to reduce manual effort and ticket volume.
  • Support compliance, security, and audit requirements (e.g., access reviews, SOX-relevant controls) for in-scope applications.

Here's what we're looking for

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience.

Staff Software Engineer, Core AI Platforms

GustoSan Francisco, CA - Hybrid; Denver, CO - Hybrid; New York, NY - Hybrid
Full-timeNot specifiedJul 9, 2026

About the Role:
We're looking for seasoned full-stack software engineers to join the teams behind Gusto's AI product platforms — the shared systems that our product teams build upon — to serve small business owners every day.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll operate across the full lifecycle of foundational systems: deliver production AI agent systems — multi-agent orchestration, tool/workflow registries, agent-to-agent handoffs, human-in-the-loop escalation, and long-running conversation state, shaping architecture early in the design process, building self-service internal features and APIs, and owning their performance long after launch. That means engineering the core business engine, enabling product teams with reliable backend services, and setting the engineering standard for those around you.

If you're drawn to work that combines technical craft with real-world impact — helping power the livelihoods of millions using Gusto products — join us!

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  •       Design and maintain evaluation frameworks across offline and online environments — including golden datasets, LLM-as-judge pipelines, and production replay — while establishing regression gates and end-to-end observability and tracing for agent runs
  •       Design, build, and test Gusto core platform services – communications, reporting, dashboards, access, workflows, risk, payments, and compliance capabilities, among others
  •       Mentor other engineers to help solve some of the hardest technical problems out there in very complex domains and at a large scale
  •       Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world
  •       Collaborate with our Product Engineering, Product Management, Data, and Design teams to understand customer pain points, come up with solutions, and then prototype, iterate, and launch daily
  •       Build platforms that engineering teams rely on, and trust to deliver products that our customers genuinely love

Here’s what we're looking for:

  •       Successful applicants typically have 8+ years of software development experience
  •       Hands-on experience taking AI/LLM capabilities to production — agent orchestration, tool integration, retrieval, and evaluation/feedback loops that keep AI improving safely
  •       AI fluency: fluent, daily use of AI coding assistants (e.g., Claude Code, or equivalent AI harness) across the development lifecycle — writing, reviewing, debugging, and documenting code — with strong judgment on when to apply them, how to evaluate output quality, and how to stay current as the tooling evolves
  •       Passion for creating scalable, efficient platforms for users
  •       Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, applying and sharing best practices to evaluate and scale AI use safely across teams

Others:

  • Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails
  • Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code
  • Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders

Do you prefer heavy feature development instead? Check out our Staff Software Engineer, Core Products job listing.

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

As a Partner Success Manager, you’ll play a key role in expanding Gusto’s presence within the accounting market, with a focus on our largest and most strategic accounting partners. This is not a traditional support role—you’ll help define and scale our enterprise partner success motion, working closely with leadership to establish best practices and drive meaningful growth.

You’ll engage directly with C-level executives, senior practice leaders, and key stakeholders at large regional and national accounting firms. Acting as a strategic advisor, you’ll develop a deep understanding of each firm’s business, challenges, and goals, and guide them on how to leverage GustoPro to improve efficiency, enhance client offerings, and grow their practice.

  • Collaborate with partners on co-branded content, case studies, and resources that highlight successful implementations and best practices
  • Advise firm leadership on how to strategically use GustoPro to drive operational efficiency and growth
  • Partner closely with Enterprise Account Managers to create and execute joint success plans, ensuring seamless onboarding, ongoing support, and expansion opportunities
  • Work cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, and Product to address partner needs and provide actionable feedback
  • Track partnership performance metrics and develop strategies to improve outcomes and ROI
  • Represent the voice of enterprise partners internally, influencing product and service enhancements
  • Contribute to the design and evolution of partner programs tailored to large accounting firms
  • Maintain deep knowledge of the accounting industry, regulatory landscape, and GustoPro’s product roadmap
  • Use AI-powered workflows as a core part of how you sell: running assigned tools daily, surfacing friction and inefficiencies as you find them, and collaborating with your team to influence what gets built or improved next.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 6+ years of experience in partner management, account management, or customer success, with a strong focus on enterprise clients
  • 4+ years in a customer-facing role
  • 2+ years of experience partnering closely with sales teams (preferred)
  • Willingness to travel, with requirements ranging from up to 50% during peak engagement periods to approximately 25% during the remainder of the year
  • Strong understanding of the accounting firm ecosystem, including business models, challenges, and technology needs
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills
  • Strong listening and empathic communication abilities
  • Analytical and strategic problem-solving mindset
  • Ability to quickly learn complex products and operate as a credible advisor
  • Comfortable working autonomously while collaborating cross-functionally
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Experience with CRM, analytics, and success tools (e.g., Salesforce, Tableau) and Learning Management Systems
  • A builder mentality, with excitement for shaping and scaling partner success at Gusto
  • Proven, day-to-day experience integrating AI into how you work — across writing, research, prep, and summarization as a core part of your workflow, with a track record of giving clear, useful feedback that helps improve your tools and processes.

The target on-target earnings (OTE) for this role range from $173,000–$185,000 in Denver and most remote locations, and $204,183–$217,500 in San Francisco and New York.  OTE is structured as 80% base salary and 20% commission, with an uncapped commission plan. With teams in Denver, San Francisco, and New York, we support more than 500,000 small businesses nationwide and are building a workplace that reflects the people we serve.

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

  • About the Role:

We're looking for an experienced infrastructure engineer to help evolve how Gusto stores and accesses data as the company scales. You'll help build a platform that lets engineering teams provision and access new datastores, evaluate and stand up highly available, horizontally scalable storage systems, and continue strengthening the resilience of the databases our product already depends on. This is a high-impact role shaping both the tools and the technology choices behind Gusto's storage layer.

    About the Team:

The Datastores Infrastructure Engineering team designs, builds, and operates the data platforms that power Gusto's product: Kafka, MySQL, Postgres, and Redis. As Gusto grows, we're rethinking how the rest of engineering provisions and accesses storage — building self-service tooling for new datastores, exploring and adopting highly available, horizontally scalable systems, and continuing to reduce blast radius and improve the resilience of the databases we already operate.

    Here's what you'll do day-to-day:

    • Build the tooling and platform that let engineering teams provision and access new datastores, and evaluate and pilot highly available, horizontally scalable storage systems to meet Gusto's growing needs
    • Take ownership of Kafka, from capacity planning and partitioning through performance tuning and reliability at scale, and help stand up and operate new non-relational datastores like DynamoDB
    • Coordinate migrations and topology changes across the datastore platform (MySQL, Postgres, Redis, Kafka) with minimal disruption to production
    • Drive efficiency and reliability improvements across the platform through query and consumer optimization, caching strategies, and workload management, backed by strong automation and standards for data consistency, integrity, and security
    • Participate in on-call and drive long-term, sustainable reductions in operational burden
    • Partner with product engineering teams to enable rapid, reliable product development, and share knowledge to grow the team's collective operating expertise

    Here's what we're looking for:

    • 6+ years of software engineering experience building and operating large-scale infrastructure systems, with deep hands-on expertise in streaming infrastructure (Kafka) and/or non-relational datastores (DynamoDB or similar) in production at scale
    • Strong understanding of distributed systems fundamentals—partitioning, replication, consistency models, and failure modes—and proven experience coordinating migrations or topology changes in production with minimal disruption
    • Experience running production infrastructure in the cloud, including caching systems like Redis/ValKey and streaming platforms like Kafka, with a track record of driving infrastructure optimization at scale
    • Strong communication skills, with the ability to simplify technical complexity and collaborate on technical direction across teams
    • Curiosity and ability to operate in an AI-native environment, using AI tooling to drive improvements in query optimization, performance evaluation, and infrastructure automation
    • Bonus: Experience with self-hosted distributed databases on Kubernetes (e.g., TiDB, CockroachDB, Vitess, or Citus), horizontal sharding, or service/vertical extraction from monolithic architectures
    • Bonus: Experience working with Ruby on Rails or similar MVC frameworks at scale

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $183,000-$200,000 /yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $222,000-$245,000 /yr for San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

We're looking for a Sales Compensation Analyst to join our Revenue Operations team. As a individual contributor, you will serve as a hands-on operator, subject matter expert, and strategic partner to our sales organization — owning end-to-end compensation administration while independently shaping the compensation programs and operational frameworks that drive Gusto's growth.

This is a high-visibility role at the intersection of Sales, Finance, and Revenue Operations. You'll bring deep expertise in sales compensation administration, advanced analytical capabilities, and a track record of building scalable programs that are fair, accurate, and motivating. You'll operate with a high degree of autonomy alongside the Head of Sales Compensation — driving plan administration, contributing to plan design for assigned segments, and setting the operational and analytical standard for the team. You'll leverage AI tools to push the boundaries of what our team can deliver.

About the Team:

The Sales Compensation team at Gusto sits within the Revenue Operations organization and serves as the backbone of how Gusto's sales force is motivated, rewarded, and aligned to company growth. We are a small, high-impact team with outsized visibility — our work touches every quota-carrying role across the company and directly influences how Gusto attracts, retains, and drives performance from top sales talent.

  • Own monthly reporting & analytics for assigned segments — deliver attainment summaries and payout forecasts to Sales, Finance/Accounting, and Rev Ops; maintain KPI dashboards and perform ad hoc analysis on performance trends and budget adherence.
  • Contribute to plan design for assigned segments — Support and, where designated, independently own compensation plan inputs for assigned sales segments, including rate validation, accelerator analysis, and rules of engagement; build financial models and scenario analyses that inform quota-setting and plan design decisions; connect compensation mechanics to broader outcomes across Finance, HR, and Sales Strategy
  • Define and improve processes and compliance — document and continuously improve comp processes; maintain adherence to internal compliance standards and accounting rules; ensure role changes, new hires, and terminations are reflected accurately across Xactly and downstream systems
  • Lead assigned cross-functional initiatives - Drive projects spanning Sales, Finance, HR, and Rev Ops; use data and structured analysis to influence stakeholders and build alignment across functions
  • Leverage AI to elevate comp operations — actively incorporate AI tools to automate repetitive tasks, accelerate reporting, and surface insights; partner with the Head of Sales Compensation to identify and scale AI-driven improvements across the team

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years of hands-on sales compensation administration experience with demonstrated end-to-end ownership of commission processes in a high-growth environment
  • Experience in full-cycle comp administration — calculations, crediting, draws, clawbacks, and dispute resolution.
  • Xactly platform expertise - intermediate-to-advanced admin required (certification preferred); proven ability to own system configuration, data integrity, and workflow design; Salesforce and Tableau/Looker/Power BI proficiency; other ICM platforms a plus
  • Advanced analytical skills - compensation modeling, scenario analysis, and reporting; solid understanding of quota-setting methodologies, GTM motions, and sales roles (AE, AM, SDR, overlay)
  • Cross-functional influence — track record of leading initiatives and driving alignment across Sales, Finance, HR, and Operations without direct authority
  • AI competency — actively uses AI tools to automate tasks, accelerate analysis, and improve accuracy with a habit of exploring and applying new tools practically
  • Attributes — detail-oriented, proactive, and highly organized; clear communicator who can simplify complex comp mechanics for reps, managers, and cross-functional partners
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Mathematics, or related field — or equivalent experience

About the Role:

Gusto is looking for a VC & PE Partnerships Manager to own and scale our relationships across venture capital (VC) and private equity (PE) firms.

This role sits at the intersection of partnerships, investing, and go-to-market strategy. You’ll own how Gusto engages with the investor ecosystem in a way that is thoughtful, scalable, and aligned with long-term business priorities, and you’ll be accountable for the results of that motion across the function. Rather than managing a broad set of one-off relationships, this role focuses on building high-leverage, programmatic ecosystem partnerships that consistently show up early in a founder’s journey.

You’ll partner closely with teams across various Partnerships teams, Marketing, Events, and Sales to define the right portfolio, engagement model, and success metrics for this motion.

About the Team:

The Channel Partnerships function sits within Gusto’s broader Partnerships organization. We work cross-functionally to extend Gusto’s reach through trusted partners, while ensuring our motions scale sustainably over time. This team acts as a connective layer between the startup ecosystem and Gusto’s go-to-market engine—balancing long-term relationship building with clear ownership, guardrails, and outcomes.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Own Gusto’s VC & PE partnership strategy end to end, accountable for results across the function
  • Define and maintain a clear partner portfolio, including which partners warrant 1:1 investment versus scaled engagement
  • Build repeatable, programmatic partnership motions (e.g., portfolio company programs, founder and operator education, marketplace or platform integrations)
  • Serve as the Tier 1 point of contact for a core group of high-impact ecosystem partners
  • Collaborate closely with Partner Marketing and Events to design scalable programs and moments of engagement
  • Partner with Recruit and other internal teams to align on net-new partner sourcing over time
  • Track and evaluate ecosystem impact across metrics such as ARR, pipeline influence, and founder reach
  • Represent Gusto externally as a credible, recognized voice in the VC & PE ecosystem, and provide thought leadership to internal teams and external partners

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 10+ years of experience in partnerships, ecosystem development, venture or growth programs, or adjacent roles, with a track record of function-level impact
  • 4+ years of experience with the venture capital and private equity ecosystem, including founders, operators, and investors
  • Proven ability to independently lead complex, cross-functional partnership initiatives that balance relationship depth with scalability
  • Strong judgment around where to invest time and where to say “not now”
  • Comfort working cross-functionally and influencing without direct authority
  • Ability to translate ambiguous inputs into clear strategy and execution plans
  • Experience working at or closely with a VC or PE firm, high-growth company, or ecosystem platform
  • Background in program design, portfolio engagement, or platform partnerships
  • Experience evaluating partnership impact beyond direct revenue attribution

Our cash compensation amount for this role is $185,000 to $200,000 USD for Denver, Phoenix, Atlanta, Chicago metro areas and $215,000 to $235,000 USD for San Francisco & New York and $170-$190 CAD for Toronto. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.

About Design at Gusto

Design at Gusto is made up of over 80 creative, collaborative people who care deeply about our mission to empower small businesses and their employees. We're a cross-functional group that is always looking for opportunities to build understanding and empathy for the people who use Gusto. We don't care much about swim lanes and though we care deeply about quality and craft, we are never precious about it.

We work closely with cross-functional partners in Product, Engineering, Data, and Marketing to design, build, and ship experiences that make a real difference. We believe great design can make hard things possible, even delightful.

We are building an AI-native design organization — and we mean that seriously. We're looking for designers who are already working this way: using AI to prototype ideas quickly, shorten customer feedback loops, and ship quality UX directly to customers. This isn't a future aspiration — it's how we work now, and it's changing what the design role looks like at Gusto and across the industry.

About the team

Contractors play a huge role in our economy, and are becoming more prevalent every year. Contract work offers flexibility and independence for workers, and hiring contractors helps small business owners scale quickly and access specialized skills. Our Contractors team helps small and medium business owners (SMBs) hire, manage, and pay domestic and international contractors. We also help contractors manage their client engagements and build their own thriving businesses.

About the role

As a staff product designer, you’ll help bring our contractor products to maturity. You’ll be the IC design leader across this area, driving foundational shifts to our platform and customer experiences. This is a unique opportunity to make major experience changes to established, business critical workflows. As part of the cross-functional leadership team, you’ll drive the entire product development process from setting the long-term vision to strategic planning; all the way to launching new features and iterating on existing ones.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day

  • Drive end-to-end design strategy and execution across the contractors experience from discovery and visioning through iterative delivery and refinement.
  • Partner with product, engineering, research, data, legal, compliance, operations, and support to define problem spaces, align on priorities, and deliver solutions that meet both customer and business needs.
  • Translate insights from research and data into intuitive, scalable experiences that support a variety of customer workflows.
  • Champion thoughtful, inclusive design by participating in design reviews, sharing feedback, and contributing to design standards and platform quality.
  • Bring genuine AI fluency to your design practice, using it to prototype quickly, shorten feedback loops, and improve contractor experiences.
  • Mentor and support fellow designers by offering thoughtful critique, sharing knowledge, and contributing to design community initiatives across Gusto.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years of product design experience with demonstrated impact in complex domains.
  • Proven ability to lead design direction at the product level and influence cross-functional partners.
  • Strong collaboration experience with partners in product, engineering, research, and data.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates high-quality interaction and visual design with thoughtful consideration for accessibility and end-to-end user experiences.
  • Comfort translating ambiguity into clear design decisions and outcomes.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to align teams around shared goals.
  • Demonstrated AI fluency in your design practice. You're using AI to move faster, prototype more, and get to better decisions.

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

Gusto is building its PEO sales org from the ground up, and we're looking for a quota-carrying seller to be one of the founding members of that team. This is a true ground-floor opportunity: you'll be among the first reps closing PEO business at Gusto, working directly with the Head of PEO Sales to prove out and scale the motion. You'll drive new PEO revenue by selling Gusto's co-employment solution to both net-new prospects and our existing base of 400,000+ customers — Gusto's single biggest competitive advantage over legacy PEOs. The market opportunity is real, the pace is fast, and the early sellers on this team will help define what "good" looks like.Use AI-powered workflows as a core part of how you sell: running assigned tools daily, surfacing friction and inefficiencies as you find them, and collaborating with your team to influence what gets built or improved next.  If you're excited to roll up your sleeves, lead by example, and architect something from scratch, let's talk.

About the Team:

You'll be an early individual contributor on Gusto's founding PEO sales team, reporting to the Head of PEO Sales. As one of the first sellers, you'll carry a personal book of business, run the full sales cycle end to end, and serve as a Subject Matter Expert who guides prospects through complex co-employment buying decisions. You'll partner closely with HR, benefits, and payroll counterparts to deliver a seamless customer experience, and you'll work alongside the Head of PEO to surface what's working in the field — feedback that directly shapes the playbook, tooling, and pipeline architecture as the org scales. Your biggest unfair advantage: Gusto's existing install base. Like the best scaled PEOs, a meaningful share of your pipeline will come from converting existing payroll customers to PEO — and you'll be one of the first to run that motion at scale.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Own the full sales cycle. Prospect, qualify, run discovery, demo, navigate complex buying groups, and close. This is a quota-carrying role for a seller who's comfortable owning a deal from first touch to signed agreement.
  • Sell across both motions. Close net-new prospects and convert existing Gusto payroll customers to PEO. You'll learn the distinct objections, value propositions, and rhythms of in-base selling vs. cold-start prospecting.
  • Serve as a PEO Subject Matter Expert. Guide prospects through co-employment, benefits, compliance, and the practical realities of moving onto a PEO. Build and maintain deep knowledge of PEO compliance, co-employment regulations, and applicable state and federal employment law.
  • Sell with selling-season fluency. Understand and plan around PEO's concentrated selling window (Sept–Dec, with the bulk of new business landing Jan 1). Build pipeline early and manage your funnel to hit those timelines.
  • Work the channel. Partner with broker, GA, and accountant referral sources to develop pipeline, and feed insights back on what's converting.
  • Manage your pipeline rigorously. Keep Salesforce clean and current, forecast accurately, and operate within the sales stages, routing, and reporting the team establishes.
  • Use AI to sell smarter. Bring genuine AI fluency to your daily workflow — leveraging AI tools for prospecting, call prep, follow-up, and forecast hygiene. We expect our sellers to be hands-on with AI and to share what's working with the broader team.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally. Work closely with Marketing, Product, and the broader Sales org to surface market signals, sharpen positioning, and improve the customer experience.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • PEO / HCM Sales Experience: 4+ years in a closing sales role, ideally in PEO, HCM, or benefits. Direct PEO selling experience is strongly preferred.
  • Quota Attainment: Consistent, demonstrable track record of meeting and exceeding individual sales targets.
  • Full-Cycle Ownership: Proven ability to own a deal end to end — prospecting, discovery, multi-stakeholder navigation, and close — in a consultative, complex sale.
  • Selling-Season Fluency: Familiarity with PEO's Jan 1 selling cycle (Sept–Dec pipeline build, renewal dynamics) is a strong plus and a key screen for PEO-specific experience vs. generic HCM.
  • Install-Base Conversion: Experience selling into or converting an existing customer base to a higher-tier or adjacent product is a plus.
  • Channel Familiarity: Understanding of broker, GA, and accountant referral channels in the PEO or benefits space.
  • Sales Acumen: Strong working knowledge of inbound and outbound sales methodologies in SMB SaaS or HCM/PEO environments.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively across HR, Benefits, Product, and Marketing; excellent interpersonal skills.
  • AI Fluency: Proven, day-to-day experience integrating AI into how you work — across writing, research, prep, and summarization as a core part of your workflow, with a track record of giving clear, useful feedback that helps improve your tools and processes.
  • Technical Proficiency: Salesforce.com (SFDC) experience required; familiarity with HCM platforms and benefits administration tools preferred.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is $115,000 to $129,500 USD for Denver, Phoenix, Atlanta, Chicago metro areas and $140,000 to $150,000 USD for San Francisco & New York. This OTE is structured with a target 60% base pay and 40% commission pay with an uncapped commission structure. Final offer amounts and the exact base/commission split are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience, and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Sitting within the IT and Enterprise Applications organization, you will partner closely with Product, Engineering, Finance, People Tech, and Operations to bridge business needs with AI driven solutions. You will act as the connector between business requirements and AI frameworks, designing Model Context Protocols (MCPs) and AI agents that make enterprise workflows smarter, faster, and more autonomous. In line with Gusto’s FY26 Enterprise Systems strategy, you will help shift our ERP and Finance systems from reactive workflows to predictive, context aware, and self improving platforms, while ensuring security, compliance, and measurable impact. This role combines hands-on technical execution with strategic systems thinking, using integration fluency, AI literacy, and business empathy to create the connective tissue that allows AI to seamlessly augment enterprise operations.

About the Team:

This role will report to the Enterprise AIT team, a group focused on driving the intelligent transformation of Gusto’s enterprise systems. • Create and manage intelligent agents that execute or augment core enterprise processes such as onboarding, billing support, and compliance monitoring using large language models and orchestration frameworks.
  • Govern the full lifecycle of MCPs and agents, ensuring adherence to enterprise data governance, privacy, and security standards, including SOX compliance, auditability, and appropriate access controls.
  • Measure and optimize impact by defining and tracking KPIs such as automation adoption, efficiency gains, agent accuracy, reliability, and cost performance, and using those insights to guide iteration.
  • Enable and influence the organization by partnering with IT, Security, and business stakeholders to build reusable AI frameworks, coach teams on safe and effective AI driven workflows, and champion AI first practices across day to day operations.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years in Business Systems Analysis, Enterprise Applications, or Automation roles, with a track record of delivering impact in complex environments.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining integrations across systems such as Jira, NetSuite, or similar, with a strong grasp of APIs, JSON, and RESTful service design.
  • Hands-on knowledge of AI agent frameworks (for example LangChain, CrewAI, Semantic Kernel, MCP) and experience designing or maintaining Model Context Protocols or equivalent frameworks.
  • Familiarity with leading LLM platforms (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini etc.) and practical experience with prompt engineering.
  • Proficiency in Python or JavaScript for automation, orchestration, and building modular, scalable AI workflows that translate complex requirements into executable solutions.
  • Strong documentation, analytical, and stakeholder communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain tradeoffs and align technical solutions with business needs.
  • Passion for building secure, compliant, and explainable AI systems, embedding risk, privacy, and compliance considerations (including SOX and audit controls) into every solution, with a growth mindset and focus on clarity, iteration, and measurable outcomes.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $175,000-$190,000 /yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $205,000-$225,000 /yr for San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.

By the Numbers:

  • Named #1 best software for small business of 2024 by G2
  • 2,700+ employees in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Turkiye and growing
  • Over $500M in annual revenue
  • The SMB market is large (and growing!) with huge opportunities for Gusto to make an incredible impact for SMBs
    • There are 6.2M employers in the US, 98% have fewer than 100 employees (1)
    • 550,000 new businesses are created each year in the US (1)

What Product Management is like at Gusto:

  • We’re looking for high-autonomy, entrepreneurial Product Managers to come build high-impact solutions for small businesses and their employees. We believe in high-ownership Product Managers who operate like business owners - owning an entire roadmap end to end, and shaping the product from strategy setting through the nitty gritty execution details.
  • Our Product team is lean, which means you’ll have a high degree of impact and ownership.
  • We’re here to serve small and medium businesses. Gusto has a strong mission-driven culture, and we care deeply about lifting up these business owners.

About the Team:

The Reporting team sits within the Core Experience organization and owns one of the most important experiences in the product: giving small business owners clear visibility into data about their payroll, benefits, and spend.

We're at an inflection point. The back-end infrastructure that makes AI-native reporting possible  is taking shape and our next chapter is delivering those capabilities to customers in ways that are genuinely useful: fixing the basics, enabling AI-powered answers, and building a reporting experience that meets customers where they are. This PM will drive that work.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Drive the strategy and roadmap end-to-end. In close collaboration with your key partners in engineering, design and data, you'll set the strategic direction for Reporting and own the roadmap across all surfaces (web, mobile, and embedded experiences).
  • Define the vision. You'll anchor the team and stakeholders around a clear, compelling vision for how traditional reports and AI-driven answers work together over time—one that connects to Gusto's broader AI transformation and gives everyone a coherent picture of where we're going.
  • Ship customer-facing value every cycle. You'll hold yourself and the team accountable for delivering real improvements that customers notice and use, balancing fixing the basics and with bigger, future swings.
  • Partner with other product teams on real use cases. You'll work hand-in-hand with app teams like Pay and Benefits to deliver reporting capabilities end-to-end through real customer journeys, proving the infrastructure works and surfacing what needs to get better.
  • Drive the data infrastructure forward. You'll bring rigor and clear prioritization to the ongoing data migration work, making sure back-end progress translates into customer-facing capability on a timeline that matters.
  • Set up and track the right metrics. You'll define leading indicators for reporting quality and customer satisfaction, use data to drive continuous improvement, and communicate progress honestly to stakeholders.
  • Raise the bar on collaboration. You'll work closely with engineering, design, and data partners to build a team that operates with speed and quality. You'll treat partner product teams as customers, giving them a clear path forward, answering their questions, and making it easy for them to build on what you've created.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • Customer obsession. You understand how small businesses use data to make decisions—questions they're actually trying to answer. You stay close to customers through direct research and indirect feedback loops (CX, support tickets, usage data), and you use what you learn to sharpen your priorities constantly.
  • Real AI fluency. You use AI tools in your own daily work for synthesis, ideation, analysis and prototyping ideas. You've built AI-powered product features or worked closely enough on them that you understand what good looks. You have a genuine point of view on what AI-native reporting means and where it's going.
  • Bias toward shipping. The Reporting team has strong foundations and the job now is to deliver. You set short, clear milestones. You move fast on near-term customer improvements while keeping the longer-term vision clear. You use staged rollouts and learning plans as a matter of course. You don't let platform work crowd out customer-facing progress because you hold both at once, and you know when to push and when to sequence.
  • Technical fluency in data. You're comfortable in conversations about data infrastructure: pipelines, data models, APIs, trade-offs between migration approaches. You don't need to write the SQL, but you understand what the engineers are building and why it matters for customers. You've worked on data products where back-end complexity is real and the front-end has to make it feel simple.
  • Cross-functional partnership. Reporting sits at the intersection of almost every team at Gusto because  App teams depend on our platform to surface data to their customers. You treat partner teams as one of your most important customer groups—you understand their needs, you give them a clear path forward, and you make it easy to build on what you've created.
  • Clear, direct communication. You can tell a simple, compelling story about a complex system. You give stakeholders honest, specific progress updates. You escalate when something is off track and you come with a plan. You make it easy for people at any level to understand where Reporting is going and why it matters.
  • Strategic clarity. You hold the near-term and long-term at the same time without letting one crowd out the other. You build a multi-year vision that connects to Gusto's AI transformation, and you sequence the work so that every cycle delivers meaningful customer value on the path to that vision. You know when to go narrow and when to open up scope, and you make that call quickly.

The experience we're looking for:

  • 8+ years of hands-on product management experience
  • At least some of that time spent on data products, analytics tools, reporting platforms, or infrastructure products where internal or external customers were a primary consideration
  • Demonstrated track record of shipping customer-facing improvements at pace—things customers notice and use
  • Experience with AI-powered product features or data experiences: building them, scoping them, evaluating them, or working closely enough on them that you understand the operational reality
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills with engineering, design, and data partners
  • Experience in environments where back-end platform maturity and front-end customer experience have to be balanced and advanced simultaneously

If you don't think you meet all of the criteria above but still are interested in the job, please apply. Nobody checks every box, and we're looking for someone excited to join the team.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $180,000 to $224,000/yr in Denver & most major metro locations, and $210,000 to $263,000/yr for San Francisco, New York, & Seattle. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above

Gusto is seeking retirement implementation specialists who thrive in a fast-paced, consultative environment and are interested in being considered for future start dates in 2026. If you’d like to be considered for future opportunities with our team, please complete the form below and upload your resume.

While start dates are still being determined for 2026, we’d love to connect! Does this sound like you? Apply below

About the Role:

The Implementation Specialist manages the end-to-end onboarding experience for 401(k) plans on the Gusto platform, spanning both new plan implementations and conversions from existing retirement plan providers. Depending on team assignment, this role guides plan sponsors and administrators through either a new plan setup or a full conversion lifecycle (from initial handoff through asset transfer, data reconciliation, and first contribution). The ideal candidate is proactive, organized, and experienced in client-facing implementation — comfortable managing a high-volume book of business, maintaining meticulous attention to detail, and confidently guiding employers through complex, multi-step processes. They work exclusively with plan sponsors and administrators and bring both operational rigor and a client-first mindset to every interaction.

About the Team:

The Retirement Onboarding team oversees two of the most consequential moments in a client's journey with Gusto 401(k): launching a brand-new plan and transitioning an existing one to a new provider. The New Plans pod designs a seamless implementation experience from day one, instilling trust and laying the foundation for long-term client success. The Conversion pod handles operationally complex asset transfers with precision, ensuring sponsors and administrators feel supported at every step and that assets move accurately and on time. Across both, we combine operational excellence with a client-first approach.

Here's what you'll do day-to-day

  • Manage a dedicated book of business of 401(k) plans — new enterprise/starter plans, conversion plans, or both — from signing through activation, asset transfer, and first contribution processing
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for plan sponsors and administrators via email, phone, and video — including inbound scheduling through Calendly
  • Guide employers through pre-ready task dashboards, proactively following up to prevent stalls and keep plans on track for their plan start date
  • Monitor and drive performance against key benchmarks including time to activate, time to ready, CSAT, and average response time
  • For conversion plans: gather required documentation, support accurate data submission, and partner with Operations to ensure smooth asset transfers and recordkeeping transitions
  • Partner cross-functionally with Sales, Operations, and Legal to resolve setup and compliance issues and align on client expectations
  • Surface client feedback to product and leadership to inform platform improvements, and stay current on 401(k) regulations and best practices
  • Use AI tools to streamline workflows, improve client communications, and increase efficiency across your book of business

Here's what we're looking for

  • 4+ years of total work experience with 3+ years in client-facing implementation, account management, technical onboarding, or retirement plan administration; startup and/or financial services experience a plus
  • Proven ability to manage a large, active book of business involving complex, multi-step processes simultaneously while staying organized and proactive across competing priorities
  • Deep knowledge in one or more of the following: SaaS, Operations, or Finance; retirement plan experience strongly preferred; familiarity with 401(k) plans, ERISA requirements, payroll systems, bundled vs. unbundled providers, or Safe Harbor compliance is a plus
  • Strong analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail, particularly around data accuracy and reconciliation
  • Proficiency with Salesforce and comfort working across case management and collaboration tools in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong communication skills across email, phone, and video with a client-first mindset
  • Ability to identify and escalate potential setup or compliance issues early, partnering with the right internal teams to resolve them
  • RPS or CRPS designation a plus, or active pursuit of either

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

We're looking for a Senior Staff Security Engineer to lead Gusto's edge and network security strategy, owning the design and operation of our Cloudflare WAF, DDoS protection, Zero Trust, and broader perimeter controls. The ideal candidate brings deep, hands-on Cloudflare expertise and a proven track record of hardening edge and network architectures at scale, including tuning WAF rulesets, defending through live DDoS events, and shipping Zero Trust rollouts engineers actually adopt. You think in terms of layered defense, measurable risk reduction, and automation over manual toil. In this role, you'll serve as a force multiplier across the security org, partnering with infrastructure and product teams to make high-impact architectural decisions that compound over time.

About the Team:

The Gusto's Enterprise Security Engineering team, a small but high-leverage group responsible for cloud security posture, edge and network defense, container security, secrets management, and endpoint protection across the company. The team runs a modern stack including Cloudflare, Wiz, CrowdStrike, Panther, and Tines, scaling impact through automation, IaC, and AI-augmented tooling. The work carries real stakes, protecting the payroll, benefits, and HR systems that hundreds of thousands of small businesses and their employees rely on every day. The team is engineering-first, with most of the roadmap living in code and a strong emphasis on partnering with infrastructure and product teams rather than gatekeeping them.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Design and operate Gusto's edge security stack including Cloudflare WAF, DDoS protection, Bot Management, WARP, Gateway, and Access, tuning rules against real traffic and shaping how engineers and operations teams reach internal systems securely.
  • Own the network security perimeter across AWS and the edge: VPC design, Network Firewall, Shield, CloudFront, NACLs, and egress filtering, all codified in Terraform and Crossplane, observable, and consistently enforced.
  • Develop policy-as-code patterns for WAF rules, network policies, and edge configuration so changes ship through pull requests with review, testing, and clean rollback paths.
  • Build detections and alerting on edge and network telemetry including Cloudflare logs, VPC Flow Logs, and CloudTrail flowing into Panther, and lead incident response for perimeter and network events.
  • Contribute broadly across the security engineering surface including cloud posture, container security, IAM, vulnerability management, and on-call, bringing a strong generalist instinct to wherever the work is most critical.
  • Operate as an AI-native engineer, using Claude Code, MCP-driven tooling, and agentic workflows as a daily force multiplier across investigation, automation, and detection engineering.
  • Prototype and ship agents, custom MCP servers, and LLM-assisted automations that compress security work from days to minutes and raise the bar for what one engineer can own.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 10+ years of hands-on security engineering experience, with significant time owning edge, network, or perimeter security at scale.
  • Deep, production-grade expertise with Cloudflare's security stack including WAF, DDoS, Bot Management, WARP, Gateway, and Access, covering rule tuning, incident response, and Zero Trust rollouts.
  • Strong network architecture skills across edge and cloud: TLS/mTLS, segmentation, egress controls, DDoS resilience, and AWS networking including VPC, Network Firewall, Shield, CloudFront, and NACLs.
  • Fluency with policy-as-code, Terraform, and CI/CD-first delivery of security controls; Crossplane or similar a plus.
  • Solid generalist foundation across cloud security, IAM, container security, and detection engineering, with hands-on incident response experience on edge and network telemetry in a modern SIEM.
  • AI-native working style with daily use of Claude Code or equivalent agentic tooling, and a track record of building AI-assisted workflows including custom MCP servers, agents, and LLM automations that compound team output.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; you can take a complex perimeter decision and explain the tradeoffs to a staff engineer, a PM, and a VP without changing the substance.
  • Relevant certifications a plus including AWS Certified Advanced Networking Specialty, AWS Certified Security Specialty, Cloudflare Certified Security Associate/Professional, CKS, or equivalent.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $210,000/yr to $230,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, $230,000/yr to $270,000/yr for San Francisco, New York & Seattle. Stock equity is additional. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

As the Senior Staff IT Controls you will own, evolve, and scale IT General Controls (ITGCs) across Gusto's enterprise application ecosystem including NetSuite, Workday, Salesforce, and adjacent platforms, serving as the single point of accountability for ITGC design, testing, remediation, and audit readiness. Sitting within the Enterprise Applications organization, you will partner closely with Internal Audit, IT, Security, and Finance to ensure Gusto meets SOX 404 compliance requirements while strengthening our broader risk posture. You will not only maintain a best-in-class controls environment, but will also pioneer the use of AI and automation to make controls testing faster, smarter, and more continuous, transforming assurance from a periodic, manual exercise into a scalable, intelligent capability. In line with Gusto's enterprise risk management strategy, you will reduce manual effort across the compliance lifecycle while raising the bar on control precision and coverage as the company scales. This is a senior, high-impact individual contributor role that blends deep IT controls expertise with a forward-looking vision for AI-augmented assurance, combining technical rigor, cross-functional partnership, and strategic systems thinking to build a controls function that is both audit-ready and future-proof.

About the Team:

This role will report to the Enterprise AIT team, a group focused on driving the intelligent transformation of Gusto’s enterprise systems. The Enterprise AIT team is responsible for integrating AI, automation, and advanced analytics across our internal applications ecosystem to improve scalability, efficiency, and decision-making. Partnering closely with Finance, Business Ops, IT, and Security, the team enables Gusto’s enterprise systems to become smarter, more predictive, and more adaptive. This is a new role, designed to expand the team’s capacity to operationalize AI within enterprise workflows and support Gusto’s broader Enterprise Systems strategy.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Own ITGC design and operation across enterprise applications — including logical access, change management, SDLC, computer operations, and segregation of duties (SoD).
  • Lead the 1st-line control environment for in-scope enterprise applications, partnering with application owners and engineering leads to embed controls into operational workflows rather than bolting them on.
  • Drive SoD strategy across ERP, HRIS, and CRM — including role design reviews, conflict remediation, mitigating control design, and ongoing monitoring tooling (e.g., Pathlock, SailPoint, Saviynt, native role analyzers).
  • Manage the audit lifecycle as the primary 1st-line liaison with Internal Audit, External Audit, and the SOX PMO — walkthroughs, evidence collection, deficiency remediation, and management responses.
  • Build AI-native continuous controls monitoring — including LLM-based evidence review, agentic control testing, and automated anomaly surveillance — to eliminate manual evidence collection, shift controls left, and surface exceptions in near real time. Treat AI agents as control operators with the same evidence and validation expectations as human operators.
  • Own the controls posture for Gusto's internal AI and automation portfolio. Partner with AI-builder teams across the company (Finance & BizOps, GRC, Engineering) to review internal AI use cases, classify by risk category, and ensure controls, evidence trails, and validation travel with the build — not bolted on after launch. Be the senior 1st-line owner for "do our internal AI builds meet our control standards?
  • Lead access governance including provisioning/deprovisioning workflows, periodic user access reviews (UARs), privileged access management, and integration with the IGA platform.
  • Govern application change management for in-scope systems — approvals, segregation between developers and production, emergency change handling, and release evidence.
  • Mature the controls program by leading rationalization initiatives, control consolidation, and the adoption of automated/preventive controls over manual/detective ones.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Security/GRC, Legal, Finance/Accounting, People Operations, and Revenue Operations to ensure controls support — rather than impede — the business.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 10+ years of experience in IT controls, audit, or enterprise applications governance, with a strong hands-on background operating in the 1st line of defense as a control owner across NetSuite, Workday, and/or Salesforce.
  • Deep expertise in SOX 404, COSO, COBIT, and ITGC frameworks, including segregation of duties (SoD) design and remediation across ERP, HRIS, and CRM environments.
  • Proven track record leading external audit engagements (Big 4 or equivalent) as the management-side owner, with public company or IPO readiness experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience building and deploying AI-augmented controls work including agents, LLM-based reviewers, or automated anomaly detection, with the ability to design controls both for and with AI systems.
  • Strong judgment on AI risk, including model risk, prompt injection, output validation, and audit trail design, with hands-on familiarity with agentic tooling such as Claude Code, MCPs, or LLM-based evidence pipelines.
  • Excellent communicator who can translate complex control concepts for executives, auditors, and engineers, with experience in continuous controls monitoring (CCM) and data-driven assurance approaches.
  • Relevant certifications (CISA, CISSP, CIA, CPA, or equivalent) and familiarity with adjacent frameworks including SOC 1/2, ISO 27001, NIST CSF, and PCI DSS are a plus.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $205,000-$220,000 /yr in Denver & most remote locations, and $245,000-$265,000 /yr for San Francisco, Seattle & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, and may vary from the amounts listed above.

About the Role:

We are building AI-powered, agentic workflows to transform how service operations scale, resolve customer needs, and maintain quality in high-stakes environments. At Gusto, that means designing systems that can earn the trust of small business owners — where a wrong answer or a missed escalation has real consequences.

As an AI Solutions Architect, you will own the end-to-end design and performance of these workflows in production — where models, tools, data, and human judgment come together to deliver outcomes. This is not a traditional architecture role. You will design, prototype, deploy, and continuously improve AI-driven systems that directly impact customer experience and operational efficiency. You will also play a key role in shaping the evolution of our AI platform by identifying capability gaps, prototyping solutions, and informing the primitives required to scale agentic systems effectively.

You will report into the Service Transformation org and work at the intersection of AI governance, service quality, and operational transformation — operating as the connective tissue between Engineering, CX, Legal, and Compliance as Gus, Gusto's AI assistant, scales.

About the Team:

The mission of our Service Transformation (CXT) team is to quickly evolve and scale how Gusto delivers outstanding service experiences and leverages AI to do so. Our team designs the systems, governance frameworks, and feedback loops that allow Gusto's service model to improve continuously, operate reliably, and earn the trust of the customers and employees who depend on it.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Architect, prototype, and own end-to-end agentic service workflow frameworks, from scoping through production deployment and iteration — including solve and assist targets, HITL protocols, override logic, and downstream quality safeguards
  • Analyze SOPs, operational metrics and interaction data to identify and prioritize high-impact automation opportunities based on volume, risk, and customer impact
  • Design and implement multi-agent orchestration patterns across tools, data sources, and decision steps within a single end-to-end workflow
  • Apply and influence AI platform capabilities in partnership with CoreX (Gusto's AI Platform team) — including orchestration, retrieval, and evaluation — helping define what needs to be built to support production workflows at scale
  • Identify platform gaps, prototype workflow-level solutions, and partner with engineering to shape the primitives required for reliable, scalable AI systems
  • Serve as the primary CX voice in Legal, Security, Compliance, and CoreX forums — translating CX quality stakes and workflow risk into terms each audience acts on, and ensuring governance requirements are embedded in design, not retrofitted after launch
  • Strengthen evaluation frameworks and feedback loops to ensure quality, compliance, and continuous improvement; contribute to Gusto's human evaluation programs and AI governance practices through deep partnership with our internal CX Labs team
  • Partner with Data teams to define and track workflow performance — including solve and assist rate, AHT, rework rate, and customer effort score — clearly distinguishing between model-level, workflow-level, and operational drivers
  • Build ROI models to quantify workflow impact across efficiency, quality, and cost before and after deployment
  • Represent workflow performance and risk to senior stakeholders with appropriate precision and brevity; communicate in a way that drives action, not overwhelm
  • Lead through ambiguity and rapid change: the function is still being defined, and you will help define it

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ years in operations, product, or AI roles — with at least 2 years designing and deploying AI-assisted or agentic workflows
  • Strong fluency with LLM systems, including prompt design, evaluation, and production behavior at scale
  • Hands-on experience with agentic tooling, orchestration frameworks, or MCP-style integrations — conceptual familiarity is not sufficient at this level
  • Experience designing human-in-the-loop (HITL) systems with clear escalation logic, override controls, and compliance-aware checkpoints
  • Working knowledge of multi-agent systems and tool coordination
  • Strong operational judgment: able to define and diagnose workflow metrics
  • Proven track record influencing cross-functional stakeholders — including Product, Engineering, Legal, Security, and Compliance — in writing, in design reviews, and in high-stakes forums
  • Familiarity with Responsible AI practices, governance, and risk management in production environments
  • Proven ability to operate in high ambiguity, create clarity, and drive alignment across technical and non-technical audiences
  • Strong systems thinking with a bias toward execution and measurable outcomes
  • Deep empathy for small business customers and the employees who serve them

Our cash compensation amount for this role is $133,470/yr to $173,511/yr in Denver & most major metro locations, and $157,145/yr to $204,289/yr for San Francisco & New York. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate location, experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Our customers come from all walks of life and so do we. We hire great people from a wide variety of backgrounds, not just because it's the right thing to do, but because it makes our company stronger. If you share our values and our enthusiasm for small businesses, you will find a home at Gusto.

Gusto considers qualified applicants with criminal histories, consistent with applicable federal, state and local law. Gusto is also committed to providing reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with disabilities and disabled veterans in our job application procedures. AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

The Compliance Manager, Broker-Dealer & Investment Adviser is an essential member of the Gusto Retirement Compliance Team, reporting to the Compliance Lead (Director). This role is the operational engine of the compliance program — owning execution, testing, surveillance, and day-to-day program management across both the RIA and BD entities.

In this role, you would assist in supervising the compliance programs (including the governance of AI tools used across the compliance program), drive exam readiness, and ensure the program is running effectively, documented thoroughly, and defensible under SEC and FINRA scrutiny. This is not a policy-only role, and it is not a passive-user-of-technology role. It requires someone who can move fluidly between strategic oversight and hands-on execution, who understands what it means to carry a compliance program in a regulated financial services environment, and who can serve as a supervisory principal over compliance and AI, ensuring tools are deployed lawfully, outputs are validated, and the program evolves alongside regulatory expectations.

About the Team:

Gusto operates RIA and BD affiliated entities, serving customers across the retirement savings landscape. Our Compliance Team is a lean, high-impact function responsible for maintaining robust, defensible compliance programs across both regulatory regimes, built to scale alongside the business. That includes staying ahead of how AI is reshaping compliance operations: the team actively governs and oversees AI tools used across the program, identifies where AI can responsibly expand team capacity, and ensures that any AI use meets the supervisory standards required by SEC and FINRA. We are building a compliance program that is both modern and defensible.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Lead and maintain FINRA state registration obligations across all required jurisdictions
  • Support employee registration filings including U4, U5, fingerprints, and background checks
  • Own and execute the compliance calendar — track deadlines, drive timely completion, and escalate to the Compliance Lead as needed
  • Lead the annual review and testing cycle across all compliance program areas: advertising, complaints, AML, trade errors, books and records, vendor due diligence, cyber, OFAC, gifts and entertainment, fees and expenses, and more
  • Own electronic communications surveillance in Global Relay including keyword configuration and user access
  • Lead advertising and collateral approval including FINRA submissions, the advertising log, and annual advertising training
  • Own Code of Ethics attestation cycles, desktop procedure management, and client agreements and disclosures review
  • Assist the Compliance Lead with regulatory filings including ADV and CRS
  • Create and administer compliance training materials across key program areas
  • Manage compliance tools including user management, brokerage feed links, and ongoing configuration
  • Contribute to AI-focused enhancements to the compliance program and identify automation opportunities
  • Serve as liaison with the Firm's compliance consulting firm and support the Compliance Lead on regulatory exams, regulator requests, and upmarket initiatives

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 5+ compliance experience at a FINRA-registered broker-dealer and SEC-registered investment adviser, with deep working knowledge of FINRA Rules , the SEC Rules (including the Marketing Rule, Reg S-P and Reg S-ID), GLBA, and Bank Secrecy Act
  • Running supervisory control testing and advertising review across both RIA and BD entities
  • Familiarity with compliance technology (e.g., ComplySci, Global Relay), books and records obligations under Rules 17a-4 and 204-2, and AI governance frameworks in a regulated environment
  • Hands-on experience executing compliance testing programs
  • Strong written communication skills — able to document compliance work to withstand regulatory scrutiny
  • Active SIE, Series 7, and Series 24 licenses
  • Ability to manage multiple programs and workstreams simultaneously in a lean, high-accountability team
  • Familiarity with AI tools in a compliance context and a clear understanding of where human oversight is non-negotiable

Our cash compensation amount for this role is $110,640/yr to $136,456/yr in Denver & most major metro locations, and $133,615/yr to $164,792/yr for San Francisco & New York. As a Data Scientist supporting Risk, you will play a crucial role in leveraging experimentation, statistical inference, and causal analysis to drive strategic decision making that contributes to the overall success of our organization. The ideal candidate is a trusted data storyteller with strong statistical and coding skills, and a passion for applying these skills to help small businesses thrive.

In this role you’ll be working with an established team and risk leaders in Engineering, Product, Design, Operation, Identity and Compliance. • Demonstrated experience leading technically complex projects with clear business impact.
  • A proactive, resilient problem-solver who independently structures ambiguous problems into actionable insights.
  • Passion for mentoring others and raising the bar for data science craft across the team.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $186,000/yr - $230,000/yr for San Francisco. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

About the Role:

We're looking for a high-ownership People Business Partner to support our Engineering, Data Science, and Security/IT organizations at Gusto. This role reports into Gusto's Head of People and serves as a trusted partner to leaders across some of our most technically complex teams.

This role blends high-trust business partnership with hands-on execution. You'll partner with leaders through organizational changes, drive core People programs and operating rhythms, and act as the connective tissue between R&D and the broader People team. The leaders you'll support have strong points of view and deep context — you add value by stress-testing their thinking, then making it happen.

The ideal candidate is equally comfortable analyzing gPulse data to surface a team health trend, running a clean reorg end-to-end, and building a lightweight process that makes a program actually land. This role is designed for someone who operates with high ownership, has a strong bias toward action, and earns trust through follow-through — not decks.

We are in an active build phase — this role requires someone who arrives ready to construct, not inherit.

About the Team:

  • Build trusted partnerships with Engineering, Data Science, and Security/IT leaders — understanding what's happening in their teams, surfacing friction early, and navigating performance management, promotions, leveling, and employee relations matters with good judgment.
  • Synthesize People data — gPulse results, Gustofied performance cycles, attrition signals, headcount trends — into clear, actionable reads for R&D leaders before they have to ask.
  • Support and operationalize core talent programs including performance cycles, calibration discussions, promotion processes, and manager enablement.
  • Reinforce high performance standards, accountability, and clarity around expectations, feedback, and growth across Engineering, Data Science, and Security/IT.
  • Serve as the liaison between R&D and Gusto's broader People team (Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, L&D, People Ops), translating company-wide programs into what they mean specifically for technical orgs — and surfacing R&D context back to the center.
  • Proactively identify risks, friction points, and opportunities for improvement using People insights and organizational data.
  • Build lightweight but scalable People frameworks, operating mechanisms, and repeatable processes that improve consistency across the business.
  • When org changes are decided, own end-to-end execution — transition planning, communication sequencing, Workday updates, leader enablement, and follow-through until nothing is left unresolved.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 10+ years of HRBP or People Partner experience, with meaningful time supporting technical organizations — Engineering, Data Science, Security, or similar.
  • Strong operator mindset. You've executed complex People work — not just advised on it. You know what a well-run reorg looks like from the inside.
  • A strong bias toward action and a high speed of execution. You'd rather move and adjust than wait for the perfect answer — and when you decide to move, you move quickly.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and partner with senior technical leaders. You have opinions, you share them, and you push back when something doesn't make sense — but you don't need to own the answer.
  • Deep experience with performance management, calibrations, promotions, and organizational design.
  • Strong analytical instincts. You're comfortable in spreadsheets and can tell a story with People data without over-engineering it.
  • You build credibility through follow-through. Leaders trust you because you do what you say you'll do.
  • Ability to thrive in ambiguity and hold a lot of detail without losing the thread.
  • Sound judgment that accounts for Gusto, not just R&D. You make People decisions that hold up beyond your client group — ones your COE partners can build for and that don’t create one-off exceptions that ripple across the company. You proactively build COE relationships because you know that’s what makes the model work.
  • AI-native mindset. You actively use AI to do your work better — synthesizing data, drafting communications, building lightweight workflows or agents to eliminate repetitive work. You know when to reach for AI, when to iterate on what it gives you, and when to keep the human in the loop. You don't just follow AI trends; you experiment with them.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is between $158,300 - $195,237/year in Denver and between $185,955 - $229,345/year for New York/San Francisco. AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

We're looking for a senior People Business Partner to support our Customer Experience organization at Gusto. This role reports into Gusto's Head of People and serves as an embedded, execution-oriented partner to the CX Leadership Team — someone who advises and then stays in the room until the work is done.

This is a senior partnership role with a team management component. You'll spend most of your time working directly with CX VPs and Directors — the leaders who run one of our largest, most operationally complex functions — on org design, workforce strategy, and the harder talent conversations that only land when there's real trust. At the same time, you'll directly empower 2 People Partners who deliver the day-to-day: coaching frontline managers, managing ER volume, and executing People programs across a large, distributed org.

You earn trust through follow-through, not decks. You stress-test thinking and then own the outcome — from org change communication to the last Workday update. You don't identify primarily as a strategist. You identify as someone who gets things done, and your ability to work alongside senior leaders is a byproduct of that credibility — not the other way around.

We are in an active build phase — this role requires someone who arrives ready to construct and deliver, not inherit and sustain.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Build trusted partnerships with CX VPs and the CX Leadership Team — understanding org dynamics, surfacing friction early, and driving decisions on talent strategy, workforce planning, and org design — staying accountable for outcomes, not just recommendations.
  • Lead the harder conversations: delivering candor to senior leaders on their own effectiveness, navigating performance decisions on high-profile talent, and partnering through significant org changes end-to-end.
  • Directly empower and develop 2 People Partners (team of 3 total) who deliver coaching at scale and execute People programs across frontline CX teams — setting a high bar, giving direct feedback, and keeping ownership with your team.
  • Synthesize People data — attrition signals, gPulse results, absenteeism trends, ER case patterns — into clear, actionable reads for CXLT before they have to ask.
  • Build lightweight, scalable People processes, operating mechanisms, and repeatable playbooks — reaching for AI when the work is repetitive or data-heavy rather than waiting for a perfect framework before shipping a good one.
  • Support and operationalize core talent programs including performance cycles, calibration discussions, promotion processes, and senior leader enablement.
  • Reinforce high performance standards, accountability, and clarity around expectations, feedback, and growth at the leadership level.
  • Serve as the liaison between CX and Gusto's broader People team (Talent Acquisition, Total Rewards, L&D, People Ops), translating company-wide programs into what they mean for the CX org — and surfacing CX context back to the center.
  • When org changes are decided, own end-to-end execution — transition planning, communication sequencing, Workday updates, leader enablement, and follow-through until nothing is left unresolved.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 10+ years of HRBP or People Partner experience, with meaningful time supporting large operational or customer-facing organizations — Customer Experience, contact centers, non-exempt or hourly workforces, or similar. Background at high-growth SaaS companies — ideally founder-led or recently public — supporting CS, CX, or customer-facing orgs preferred.
  • A builder's instinct. You don't wait for the perfect framework before shipping a good one. When you hit a repetitive or data-heavy task, your first move is to ask "can we build something to handle this?" — and then you go do it. You ship lightweight, scalable processes and playbooks, and you do it fast.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate at every altitude — a frontline escalation at 9am and an org design conversation at 3pm, with equal confidence in both. You've built enough credibility through execution that senior leaders pull you in; you're trusted enough to push back, and reliable enough to be handed the execution afterward.
  • Prior people management experience required. Demonstrated ability to develop and coach a team of PPs while maintaining your own senior client relationships — sets a high bar, gives direct feedback, and keeps ownership with the team.
  • A track record of owning programs end-to-end — not just designing them. You've run a performance cycle, a reduction, or a leadership change from kickoff to close, and you know what it takes to get all the way to done.
  • Strong operator mindset. You've executed complex People work end-to-end — not just advised on it. You know what a well-run reorg or high-stakes talent decision looks like from the inside.
  • A strong bias toward action and a high speed of execution. You'd rather move and adjust than wait for the perfect answer — and when you decide to move, you move quickly.
  • Comfortable working with People data — attrition, engagement, ER trends, workforce analytics — and translating it into a clear story for a CX VP without over-engineering it.

  • Establish robust practices for validation, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing performance management of platform services and the agents built on them.
  • Communicate technical strategy, tradeoffs, and impact clearly to executives and non-technical partners.
  • Mentor engineers across teams, raising the bar on AI/ML best practices and fostering a culture of pragmatic innovation.

Here’s what we’re looking for

AI is a fundamental part of how work gets done at Gusto. We expect all team members to actively engage with AI tools relevant to their role and grow their fluency as the technology evolves. AI experience requirements vary by role and will be assessed during the interview process.

About the Role:

As a Staff Engineer on the Developer Productivity - AI Developer Tools team, you will be the architectural anchor shaping the AI platform that accelerates engineering across Gusto. You will redefine how our entire engineering organization builds, tests, and ships software by architecting a highly secure, context-aware, "AI-native" development lifecycle.

Your mission is to eliminate developer friction through AI tools, multi-agent systems, and intelligent automation. Whether you are building bespoke internal coding assistants, automating sprawling codebase refactors, or deploying AI to self-heal CI/CD pipelines, your work will directly multiply the velocity of hundreds of builders. Help us drive developer productivity by building the next generation of AI tools.

About the Team:

The AI Developer Tools team is a specialized team within Developer Productivity. We believe AI is the next great leap in software craftsmanship. Our goal is to provide every builder at Gusto with a suite of "superpowers" tools that deeply understand our codebase and absorb operational toil so engineers can focus on creative problem-solving. We treat our fellow engineers as our primary customers, prioritizing developer experiences that are not just powerful, but absolutely delightful to use.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Architect AI Core Infrastructure: Design, scale, and maintain the internal platform and APIs that integrate LLMs into the developer workflow, with a heavy focus on autonomous agents, custom retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and smart context-delivery systems.
  • Drive Technical Leadership & Vision: Establish engineering best practices for building with AI at Gusto, including robust evaluation frameworks (evals), guardrails for code safety, and strategies for optimizing model latency and token spend.

  • Optimize Feedback Loops: Identify and eliminate critical bottlenecks in the local-to-production lifecycle at scale across Gusto.
  • Maintain Enterprise Reliability: Treat AI infrastructure with production-grade rigor. Monitor system health, diagnose complex integration or networking issues, and mitigate model drift or downtime.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 8+ Years of Systems Expertise: You are a seasoned engineer who is highly comfortable navigating massive, complex codebases and delivering production-grade, distributed software.
  • Production AI Experience: You have a proven track record of moving AI beyond prototypes. You possess a deep understanding of prompt engineering, fine-tuning, RAG architectures, and orchestrating multi-agent workflows.
  • Developer-First Mindset: You are passionate about Developer Experience and Productivity. You intuitively understand what makes an internal tool frictionless, fast, and empowering for other engineers.
  • Strategic Execution: You don't just build wrappers; you think deeply about data privacy, security, cost management, and systemic reliability when deploying AI solutions.
  • Exceptional Communication: You can seamlessly translate bleeding-edge AI capabilities into clear, actionable infrastructure strategies, mentoring junior engineers and aligning cross-functional stakeholders along the way.
  • Working as a Team: You work across team boundaries and bring other teams and groups along with you towards our strategic vision.

Our cash compensation amount for this role is targeted at $180,000/yr to $200,000/yr in Denver & most remote locations, $220,000/yr to $245,000/yr for San Francisco, New York & Seattle. Payment Operations

GustoNew York, NY

About the Role:

Payments at Gusto aren't just infrastructure — they're the reason people get paid on time, every time. Payment Operations sits within Gusto's Money team, a cross-functional group spanning Engineering, Product, and Operations that powers money movement across Gusto's growing product surface: core payroll, contractor payments, international money movement, and new business offerings like PEO. As a Payment Operations Analyst, you'll own specific end-to-end payment workflows, resolve exceptions that require real judgment, and help make our systems more reliable and efficient over time. Gusto's payment surface area is expanding — and this team is at the center of that growth. This is a role for someone who can shift from investigating a single misfired transaction to coordinating a response on a payment outage affecting thousands — and bring the same rigor to both. You think in systems. You hold partners accountable. You lead with curiosity and embrace AI as a core part of how you work. You'll collaborate closely with Engineering, Product, Accounting, Risk, and CX — and you'll develop strong day-to-day relationships with Gusto's bank and payment partners. When something breaks or slows down, you're the one who drives it to resolution.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Support the payment lifecycle end-to-end: Own the operational layer of specific payment workflows — ACH processing, exception handling, refunds, collection re-debits, reconciliation. When something is off, you investigate, escalate where needed, and see it through to resolution. And when you see a pattern, you push to fix the root cause.
  • Build alongside Product and Engineering: Payment Operations doesn't just react — we shape how the systems work. You'll contribute to product specs, surface operational pain points, help define requirements, and participate in launches. You're a partner in building, not just a consumer of what gets shipped.
  • Close the loop on customer pain: Customer and CX feedback is signal. You actively mine it to identify friction in payment flows, prioritize what matters, and bring those insights into the operational and product conversations where decisions get made.
  • Think in systems: Connect the dots across rails, partners, reconciliation, compliance, and customer experience. When an issue surfaces, you understand how it ripples — and you bring that perspective to cross-functional conversations.
  • Hold partners to a high standard: Work directly with Gusto's bank and payment partners — domestic and international — to triage issues, resolve escalations, and maintain strong working relationships. You know how to be firm and collaborative at the same time, and you don't let things sit.
  • Lead with AI: You use AI as a genuine work partner — to move faster on analysis, draft communications, synthesize data, and automate the repetitive. You're always looking for the smarter way to get to the answer.

Here’s what we're looking for:

  • 3+ years of experience in payment operations, banking operations, treasury operations, or a related role at a fintech or financial institution
  • Working knowledge of domestic payment rails (ACH/Nacha, wires, RTP) and/or international money movement (cross-border transfers, FX, global disbursement networks); experience across both is a strong plus
  • Strong analytical instincts — you look for the pattern behind the problem and can query or structure data to find it (SQL a plus but not required)
  • Experience working with bank portals, payment processors, or reconciliation tools
  • Ability to communicate clearly with both operational and technical counterparts; you can write a crisp Slack to an engineer and a professional escalation to a bank partner
  • Comfortable working in ambiguity and taking ownership without waiting for perfect information
  • Eager to build AI into how you work — whether you're already using it daily or just getting started, you see it as a genuine productivity lever and are committed to developing that fluency
  • Knowledge of relevant compliance frameworks (Nacha operating rules, unclaimed property, money transmission) is a strong plus

Our cash compensation amount for this role is between $66,085 - $79,302/year in Denver and between $82,610 - $99,132/year for New York/San Francisco. We’re looking for seasoned full-stack software engineers to join Gusto’s Growth team building the systems and workflows that help turn customer and go-to-market signals into timely, relevant engagement experiences across the funnel.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll operate across the full product lifecycle: shaping capabilities from early definition and design through launch and long-term iteration. That means writing clean frontend code, designing and building reliable backend APIs and services, influencing product and platform direction, and taking ownership of what happens after a feature ships.

If you’re drawn to work that combines technical craft with real-world impact — helping teams deliver more relevant, personalized, and effective customer experiences at scale - join us.

Here’s what you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Design, build, and test full-stack platform capabilities that power signal-driven workflows and customer engagement experiences across the funnel
  • Build systems that ingest, prioritize, and route product, marketing, and sales signals into actionable next-best steps for downstream teams and tools
  • Develop backend services and internal interfaces that support orchestration, decisioning, experimentation, and delivery across evolving engagement channels
  • Help scale one of the largest Ruby/Rails and Javascript/React applications in the world, with a strong focus on performance, maintainability, and reliability
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Data, Design, Platform Engineering, and go-to-market partners to understand pain points, prototype solutions, and launch iteratively
  • Mentor other engineers to help solve complex technical problems across distributed systems, product workflows, and platform architecture
  • Build products and platforms that internal teams love to use and that create measurable customer and business impact

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Successful applicants typically have 8+ years of software development experience
  • Experience building scalable full-stack systems that solve meaningful customer or business problems
  • Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and drive measurable impact at scale
  • Experience with large-scale refactors, performance and reliability issues, and a strong sense of ownership over all aspects of a product or platform area
  • Experience designing backend APIs, data flows, and event-driven services that integrate reliably with other systems
  • Strong product and platform instincts, with the ability to balance technical quality, speed, and long-term maintainability
  • Ability to mentor engineers and raise the quality bar across the team
  • Experience leveraging AI tools or systems to accelerate development, improve testing, and unlock new product capabilities
  • Curiosity and experimentation with emerging AI frameworks, and sound judgment about how to evaluate and scale AI use safely and effectively

Others:

  • Experience in, or interest working in, Ruby on Rails
  • Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment
  • Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, well-documented code
  • Ability to effectively communicate across engineering teams and with business stakeholders
