What you'll own

Design, build, and operate the core IAM backend services that control user access to Stripe, including new permission models, custom roles, and features like Account Groups. Ship end‑to‑end functionality across the stack, from API and database design to frontend components, and improve engineering standards and tooling.

What they're looking for

A Staff‑level engineer with 10+ years of software development experience, strong expertise in building resilient, scalable distributed systems, and proficiency in a modern backend language such as Go, Ruby, or Java. Must be able to mentor engineers and collaborate cross‑functionally with product and design, with bonus experience in IAM, authentication/authorization, or frontend React/TypeScript.

Why this role matters

IAM is the gatekeeper for every Stripe user’s experience, ensuring the right people have secure access to products and data. The team’s work underpins Stripe’s mission to expand internet GDP by providing a reliable, auditable access platform for millions of businesses.

About this role

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies—from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups—use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

The IAM Control Plane team’s mission is to empower Stripe users to easily and securely manage their access to Stripe products and data. As part of Stripe's Organizations and Auth Platform, we own the platform for API keys, user roles, and access auditing, ensuring the right people have the keys to the kingdom - and no one else. We are a team of around 10 engineers with an ambitious roadmap, blending deep platform work with direct product impact.

What you’ll do

You will design, build, and maintain the critical systems that control our user’s access to Stripe.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the next generation of IAM primitives to securely power AI-driven agentic experiences on Stripe
  • Develop new user-facing permission models, including custom roles and granular access controls
  • Architect and implement platform features like Account Groups to simplify access management for large organizations
  • Own and operate mission-critical, highly-available backend services that are fundamental to every Stripe user's experience
  • Work across the stack to ship end-to-end features, from API design and database modeling to frontend components
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes as well as mentor team members

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements

  • This is a Staff-level role, so we're targeting 10+ years in software development
  • A high bar for engineering quality and a passion for building resilient, scalable distributed systems
  • Experience designing, building, and operating backend services in a professional environment
  • The ability to navigate ambiguity and solve complex problems with a product-minded approach
  • Proficiency in a modern backend language such as Go, Ruby, Java, or similar
  • Mentor engineers at all levels, supporting their professional growth and technical leadership development
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, and design teams to define product strategy and user experience

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with Identity and Access Management (IAM), authentication, or authorization systems
  • Familiarity with frontend technologies like React and TypeScript
  • Experience working on developer platforms or infrastructure
