What you'll own

Lead technically complex projects from concept to production, simplifying code and infrastructure while ensuring high performance and reliability for the Investors platform.

What they're looking for

8+ years of software engineering experience with Python, Django, React, Postgres, Kafka (or willingness to learn), plus strong execution, strategic thinking, and mentorship abilities.

Why this role matters

The role drives the core back‑office system that powers private market fund financials, tax compliance, and LP reporting, enabling real‑money transactions to be automated and reliable.

About this role

The Company You’ll Join

Carta is the connected platform and AI-native ecosystem for private capital. Built to replace fragmented tools with a single system of record, Carta brings together the software, services, and legal infrastructure that founders use to manage equity, fund managers use to run administration and reporting, and legal teams use to close transactions. Trusted by 55,000 companies and 1.8M+ equity holders in 160+ countries, and 10,000 funds and SPVs representing $250B+ in assets under management, Carta is transforming how private capital operates. Recognized by Fortune, Forbes, Fast Company, Inc. and Great Places to Work.

For more information about our offices and culture, check out our Carta careers page.

The Team You'll Work With

Every fund CFO’s office runs on spreadsheets, email threads, and a pile of portals that don’t talk to each other. We’re replacing all of it. Carta’s Investors business unit is building the system of record for private markets: the ledger, the books, the tax filings, the LP reporting, and the deal pipeline, all in one connected platform. Nearly 7,000 funds and SPVs and $150B in assets already run through it today.

Here’s the fun part: we’re not building another portal. We’re building a programmable back office. An expense lands in an inbox and gets coded to the right entity and staged for approval. A capital call goes out from a sentence. A K-1 is ready on day one. The software does the work, and customers reach it through the AI tools they already use.

It’s a pivotal moment for the business unit. The core is proven (90% of cash transactions reconciled in one day), and now we’re connecting it into a single platform that runs from fund financials to tax to LP reporting. You’ll join small, senior teams that blend startup-style speed with the rigor of software that moves real money.

We’re hiring multiple engineers, and you’ll be hired into the Investors business unit as a whole, then matched to a focus area based on your strengths and interests during our interview process. These focus areas include:

  • Fund Financials: Ledger, expense allocation, and cash reconciliation. Get the numbers right, automatically, at scale.
  • Tax and Compliance: K-1s, KYC, and audit trails. Compliance as code instead of compliance as a checklist.
  • LP Management and Reporting: Capital calls, distributions, PCAPs, and tearsheets. Turn quarterly reporting from a scramble into a query.

The Problems You'll Solve

As a Senior Software Engineer II within the Investors business unit, you will lead technically complex projects and serve as a multiplier for your team. You’ll work to:

  • Drive Implementation: Lead the execution of complex technical projects, driving them from concept to production while maintaining high standards for performance and reliability.
  • Simplify Systems: Dig deep into our architecture to identify opportunities to simplify code and infrastructure, prioritizing changes that have a measurable business impact.
  • Leverage Modern Tooling: Use the best AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate your workflow, improve code quality, and spend more of your time solving the high-level logic and unconventional problems
  • Foster Growth: Act as a mentor and coach, raising the technical bar for your peers through diligent PR reviews and architectural guidance.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner with product and design to ensure we are building the right solution for the user, not just following a specification.

About You

  • The Tech Stack: You have experience with (or a desire to learn) our core technologies: Python, Django, React, Postgres, and Kafka. We also utilize Java, gRPC, and AWS.
  • Execution: You can break down complex user stories into actionable tasks and execute them with minimal guidance.
  • Strategic Mindset: You understand the "why" behind your code and can articulate technical trade-offs to stakeholders.
  • Experience: We recommend 8+ years of professional software engineering experience for this level.

Salary

Carta’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary, equity for all full time roles, exceptional benefits, and, for applicable roles, commissions plans. Our minimum cash compensation (salary + commission if applicable) range for this role is:

  • $212,500 - $250,000 in New York, NY

Final offers may vary from the amount listed based on geography, candidate experience and expertise, and other factors.
