Lead and grow a full‑stack engineering team, set technical strategy and roadmap, own the reliability and performance of the consumer‑critical Repayment UX, and manage on‑call and incident response.
7+ years of software engineering experience with 3+ years of people‑management, strong background in consumer‑facing full‑stack development (React/React Native and backend‑for‑frontend), and proven ability to drive architecture, quality, and cross‑functional delivery.
The Repayment UX handles the high‑trust moment when millions of users repay loans, directly impacting customer trust, product reliability, and Affirm’s $40B annual loan repayments.
A calm, decisive, team‑first leader who thrives in ambiguous, fast‑moving environments, enjoys empowering senior engineers, and wants to shape a critical, high‑impact product at scale.
At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most.
The Repayment UX team owns one of the most high-trust surfaces across Affirm’s products: the moment a customer pays us back. We’re a full-stack team based entirely in Europe within the same time zone, but culturally rooted in Silicon Valley. The user journeys we build and own reach more than 20 million people who together repay over $40B in loans each year. We are full-stack owners of the Manage tab within our mobile and web apps, where customers stay on top of their payment plans and make the payments.
We are looking for an empowering, accountable Engineering Manager to lead and grow Repayment UX. You’ll set the team’s technical direction, taking ownership of their roadmap, delivery and on-call support. You’ll partner closely with Product, Design, Analytics, and other Engineering teams. You’ll take a high-performing team anchored to their tech lead and give it dedicated leadership.
If you are passionate about creating world-class user experiences and excited by the challenge of directly owning a critical part of a fast-growing product – join us. Help build the next generation of Affirm’s apps, improving people’s lives at scale.
What you’ll do
You will lead and grow a well-balanced team of engineers – setting clear expectations, giving direct feedback, and developing each engineer toward their next level.
You will own the team’s technical strategy and multi-quarter roadmap, tying it to initiatives that build customer trust and move Affirm’s business.
You will empower your tech lead and engineers to hold the design and quality bar, supporting them hands-on throughout technical design and cross-functional alignment.
You will own the availability, reliability, and performance of consumer-critical systems – on-call, incident response, and reducing operational toil.
You will keep the team shipping in small increments, breaking large programs into sprint-sized milestones with clear, accountable owners.
You will partner across Product, Design, and Analytics, and other Engineering teams, building trust and taking part in cross-functional efforts.
You will guide the team to multiply their output through focus and leverage, including agentic AI.
You will drive hiring and onboarding to grow a diverse, high-performing team, and foster a culture of ownership, quality, and transparency.
What we look for
You have 7+ years of software engineering experience, including 3+ years managing and growing engineering teams.
You have proven experience delivering consumer-facing software and driving execution through ambiguity.
You have a track record of managing performance directly – setting clear expectations, giving candid feedback, and developing engineers toward results and growth.
You have the technical judgment required to guide architecture, quality, and reliability decisions, with the instinct to empower senior engineers to make the calls rather than making them all yourself.
You have experience leading significant technical initiatives end-to-end, ideally decoupling or re-platforming consumer-facing systems within clear time constraints.
You are familiar with modern full-stack development – declarative UI frameworks like React or React Native, and a backend-for-frontend behind them.
You have a calm, decisive presence through change and ambiguity – building alignment, resolving tensions, and leading others through complex decisions.
You are a humble, team-first leader who builds a high-trust, psychologically safe culture, while also prioritizing your own growth.
You have strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with our global cross-functional teams.
