What you'll own

You’ll set engineering direction with Product and Design, lead planning and execution, and own delivery from problem definition through rollout and ongoing operation while upholding high engineering standards.

What they're looking for

4+ years of engineering management (teams of 5+), 8+ years of software development, experience building user‑facing products, strong product judgment, ability to turn ambiguous goals into clear priorities, and proven coaching and communication skills.

Why this role matters

Self‑serve Direct Onboarding accelerates how quickly businesses can start using Stripe, boosting activation speed, trust, and supporting Stripe’s mission to increase the internet’s GDP.

Best suited to

A senior engineering leader who thrives on shaping strategy, guiding architecture across UI, APIs and backend, mentoring engineers, and collaborating with cross‑functional partners.

About this role

Who we are

About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies, from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups, use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone’s reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

Self Serve Direct Onboarding helps businesses start using Stripe’s products quickly and confidently. The team builds self-service experiences that guide users through providing business information and completing required checks. We turn complex financial, regulatory, and verification requirements into clear steps, shaping both how quickly businesses can get started and the trust they place in Stripe.

At the heart of this work is a shared product activation experience: a consistent way for businesses to start using new financial capabilities as they grow. This foundation helps users avoid repeating information and makes it simpler for product teams to integrate onboarding into their offerings.

AI creates an opportunity to rethink how businesses get started on Stripe. The team is designing onboarding journeys for users who interact directly through a user interface, work with AI agents, or delegate onboarding to agents entirely. We’re improving today’s experience while building the foundations for agent-led onboarding.

What you’ll do

You’ll set engineering direction in partnership with Product and Design and develop the team delivering it. The role combines improving activation today with shaping how onboarding works for people and AI agents.

You’ll use strong product judgment to decide where to experiment, where to build reusable foundations, and how to measure progress through faster activation, fewer repeated steps, and reliable outcomes. You’ll work across Stripe to align teams and resolve dependencies, while coaching engineers and giving them meaningful ownership.

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering planning and execution, partnering closely with Product and Design.
  • Shape the team’s strategy and roadmap, aligning partners across product engineering, Risk, Compliance, and Operations.
  • Own delivery from problem definition through rollout and ongoing operation, using experimentation to improve activation while maintaining risk controls.
  • Uphold high engineering standards across the team’s codebases and development practices.
  • Turn ambiguous goals into focused plans, resolve dependencies, and balance new capabilities with operational health.
  • Coach and mentor engineers, provide candid feedback, and support career development tailored to their goals.
  • Partner with Recruiting to hire engineers and build a diverse, high-performing team.

Who you are

We’re looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, we encourage you to apply.

Minimum requirements

  • 4+ years of engineering management experience, directly managing and growing teams of 5+ engineers building and shipping products at scale.
  • 8+ years of full-time software development experience.
  • Experience building user-facing products, with strong user empathy and product judgment.
  • Experience turning ambiguous goals into clear priorities and delivering work that depends on multiple teams.
  • A track record of coaching engineers, supporting their growth, and building an environment of candid feedback, inclusion, and shared ownership.
  • Technical depth to guide architecture and make pragmatic tradeoffs across user interfaces, APIs, backend workflows, and production reliability.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including the ability to align technical and nontechnical partners with different priorities and constraints.

Preferred qualifications

    • Experience simplifying complex customer journeys and using data, user feedback, and experimentation to evaluate outcomes.
    • Experience modernizing an established product or architecture while continuing to ship improvements and maintain production reliability.
    • Experience shipping AI-assisted workflows or agent-facing APIs, with clear approaches to evaluating quality and correctness.
