About this role

Ready to do the most impactful work of your career? At Coinbase, we are uncompromising on our mission to increase economic freedom. The bar is high, the environment is intense, and we like it that way. This isn't a place for complacency, it’s a place to be pushed past your perceived limits. If you're ready to build the future of finance alongside people who refuse to settle for "good enough," you belong here. Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Expect to get together quarterly for intense in-person working sessions called “surges.” learn more about working at Coinbase.

Coinbase’s EU Legal team helps build the future of finance by turning complex regulation into practical paths forward. In this role, you’ll advise our European businesses on the legal questions that shape how we launch products, enter markets, and serve customers. You’ll partner with business leaders, Compliance, and the global Legal team, bringing clear judgment and ownership to decisions that advance Coinbase’s mission to increase economic freedom.

What You’ll Do

  • Partner with business leaders and Compliance to advise on EU and international e-money, payment services, financial services, and digital asset requirements.
  • Advise regional operating entities on new products and services, intercompany arrangements, commercial relationships, banking partnerships, and retail and institutional terms of business.
  • Guide product launches, market expansion, and marketing initiatives across jurisdictions, coordinating with the US-based Legal team and other regional counsel.
  • Monitor European and international legal and policy developments, explain their business implications, and support Coinbase’s advocacy for effective digital asset regulation.
  • Assess legal and regulatory risks, recommend practical solutions, and improve processes to support a growing international business.
  • Manage outside counsel on specialist matters and projects, maintaining internal expertise and accountability for the advice delivered.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Qualified lawyer in the UK, Ireland, France, or Luxembourg, with 7+ years’ relevant experience advising regulated EU e-money, payment services, or financial services institutions, either in-house or at a law firm.
  • Strong knowledge of EU financial services regulation, including PSD2, the Second Electronic Money Directive, and/or MiFID II. Digital asset expertise, including MiCAR registration regimes, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience engaging with European financial services regulators, particularly the CSSF or Central Bank of Ireland, is preferred.
  • Ability to manage complex projects across functions and time zones, meet tight deadlines, and drive decisions with limited supervision.
  • Sound legal judgment, analytical rigour, and commercial pragmatism, with excellent writing skills and the ability to deliver concise, actionable advice to executives.
  • Ability to prioritise a varied workload, work independently under regulatory scrutiny, and build processes that improve legal support. Previous in-house experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrates the ability to responsibly use generative AI tools and copilots (e.g., LibreChat, Gemini, Glean) in daily workflows, continuously learn as tools evolve, and apply human-in-the-loop practices to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in efficiency, cost, and quality.
