About this role

About Betterment

Betterment is a leading, technology-driven financial services company that offers investing, savings and retirement solutions for retail investors and investment advisors as well as financial wellness solutions, including a 401(k) for small and medium-sized businesses. Our team is passionate about our mission, to empower people to build wealth with confidence and ease.  We’re headquartered in NYC and offer hybrid NY-based positions (four days/ week in-office, with no required office days during the summer and winter holidays).

About the Role

Betterment's mission is to empower people to make the most of their money so they can live better. As Product Leader for our Broker-Dealer division (Custody, Trading, and Market Data), you'll own the foundational asset management systems behind $70+ billion in assets for more than 1 million clients.

You'll lead a team of PMs responsible for shipping new capabilities for the clients and advisors we serve, while ensuring the systems underneath them continue to run efficiently and resiliently at scale. The Broker-Dealer platform powers all three of Betterment's lines of business: retail investing, Betterment for Advisors, and Betterment at Work. You'll balance their needs on a single shared roadmap.

This is a deeply technical domain, and it requires a leader who gets into the details on topics like tax lot tracking, fee accrual, and trade aggregation, while giving their teams the strategic context behind every priority. In this highly cross-functional role, you'll represent the critical Broker-Dealer domain to stakeholders and executives across the company, and partner closely with Legal, Compliance, Operations and Capital Markets to navigate the requirements of a highly-regulated environment. You’ll also collaborate with our team of Investing experts to develop cutting edge portfolio management capabilities.

This role is based out of our NYC office. Below we've reflected the base salary range for this position. Actual salaries may vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of Betterment’s total compensation package for employees.

  • New York City: $220,000- $250,000

This job may also be eligible for variable compensation in the form of a company incentive bonus.

A Day in the Life

  • Oversee the Product teams responsible for our portfolio management, trade execution, recordkeeping, high-yield cash and market data platforms, which are fundamental to our role as an investment manager and custodian for our clients.
  • Deeply understand our target clients, championing functionality that enriches their asset management experience and drives business value.
  • Ensure that PMs and engineers in the Broker-Dealer domain understand the business and strategic context behind their work.
  • Dive into the technical weeds of high-impact project efforts that require additional support and cross-functional alignment
  • Use AI-driven workflows and prototyping to accelerate the product development lifecycle and enable better team velocity and collaboration
  • Balance and find throughlines between the  needs of investors across all three lines of business: retail clients, advised clients, and 401(k) participants.
  • Define and track the metrics that matter for platform health, from trade execution quality to reconciliation accuracy, and hold a high bar for operational excellence.
  • Communicate with conviction the Broker-Dealer’s roadmap priorities and tradeoffs to executives and stakeholders alike, translating deep technical work into business impact.
  • Partner with Operations leadership to ensure staff have the proper tools to manage rapidly expanding cash and brokerage systems.
  • Hire, manage, and develop a team of high-performing PMs.

What We’re Looking For

  • 8-12 years of product management experience leading products in complex technical domains. Prior experience in trading or investment platforms is a significant plus.
  • Technical fluency to engage credibly with engineers on system design, data flows, and platform tradeoffs.
  • Experience managing, leading, and developing a team of product managers.
  • Strong storytelling skills to distill complex technical concepts into accessible information for partner organizations and clients.
  • Comfort operating at multiple altitudes: setting multi-year platform strategy one day, unblocking a mutual fund edge case the next.
  • Creative problem-solving skills to deliver innovative functionality within regulatory and technical constraints.
  • A self-starter with proven success in launching products in collaboration with a broad set of stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical abilities and enthusiasm for data-driven decision-making.
